I've been thinking about getting a Deck and was wondering if anyone has experience running Bedrock Minecraft on it? Specifically with regards to controls, and updates. A few years ago I was playing Bedrock on my linux laptop, and it seemed like there were times where the client would be outdated, keeping me from playing with my kid.

There's an unofficial Bedrock launcher in Discover, it usually works for me! That being said I've had better luck running Java with a controller mod like Controllable. I run Geyser on my server so both clients work!

One of the biggest issues that I've had with the unofficial launcher is that it limits render distance to the maximum that is available on mobile which is significantly less that the Steamdeck can handle.

Yea it has worked mostly fine for me, you can even do a lot for controls just with steam input. I don't use a mod for Java just spent a lot of time making a good mapping. My only issue with the unofficial bedrock launcher is that it id sometimes slow to update to new releases.
