capitalism removed the “I want to make a living” option and forced everyone into “I need every ounce of money I can get just to survive”

No, other way around. First comes Feudalism, fifty kings for the world, then comes Capitalism, five thousand kings for the world, then comes Socialism, (insert world population here) kings for the world.
