It was clear from the start that Facebook would back out of [offering news in] Canada since they literally did that in Australia.
This isn't reddit, did you even glance at the article? Your entire comment is misinformation lol
Of course I did - they threatened to ban news in Canada. I don't see how stating the obvious is misinformation.
I don't appreciate the knee-jerk condescension that I've been seeing less of here than on reddit. Just be nice.
Facebook hasn't "literally [backed out] of Australia", the article covers that. You may not appreciate the condescension but I mean, you're doubling down now on a false premise and refusing to acknowledge the actual specifics of the situation, I'm not sure what you expect when you're seemingly knowingly spreading misinformation.
Facebook blocked news on their platform in Australia. Everybody in this sub knows it's in regards to news if you're implying I'm claiming that their entire service was unavailable. This is like the smallest possible of hairs to split.

Yes, I totally agree! As you cited, Facebook blocked news on their platform in Aus (as I phrased it, backed out) after their legislation was passed. And now it's possible that they do the same in Canada. I don't understand why you're hounding me and accusing me of spreading misinformation. Toxic.

I'm aware of the outcome in Australia which came after amendments that allowed Facebook to choose which companies it worked with. I personally found it concerning that it resulted in Facebook having the keys to choose which publishers they would pay or block, rather than having to pay for all news shared. That's my understanding and am open to correction if I'm missing something.
Ultimately, Australia passed the law, Facebook turned off news, and only turned it back on after gaining ground on immendments.
So...They're now offering news in Australia and paying Australian news networks for it? What's the problem?
The only thing that could make them backup is if most countries do it.
