What kind of friends do you have? I was able to explain my decision for privacy to my friends and they understood my choice. They still don't care them self but no one is calling me weird names. They fully understand me. They are just to lazy to give up the luxury from google etc.
But maybe that's because I'm from Germany. Here the concept of privacy is something most people like, at least in real life and in untechnical situations. I think they just don't understand enough about tech to understand that it pretty much has the same importance as the Real Life when it comes to maintaining your privacy.
Anyways. I will probably join.
Edit: Link is not working.
My experience from interacting with Germans is that you are above-average privacy conscious, which I find very admirable and gives me some level of hope that it is possible to gain some general awareness on these topics also in my country and elsewhere. Why do you think it is so?
The link now works! Please join and bring along your privacy-loving friends!
I too observed the same after reading numerous comments and posts from EU residents in Reddit and the like. I think this has to do with strict Data privacy laws there and it's propagated in various forms of media so even the average consumer knows about it.
I think for this to happen stricter data privacy laws should be adapted by countries and should be advertised so hard that even your grandma knows about it. This is the only way we can normalise conversations about privacy.
Sorry! I'm still new to Matrix so I'm still figuring out stuff. I'll check what to do and post the new link here.
Yeah, being from the EU might be helpful to you since more people are aware of the importance of data privacy thanks to laws like GDPR. But where I live the concept of privacy is alien. Privacy is taboo here and trying to achieve physical privacy itself will be frustrating don't even get me started on the digital side.
I was just thinking, maybe this is a point you can bring up to friends that this concept is much more normal in the EU. I mean as long as they are not utterly racist they cant call an entire continent Terrorist or anything, right? Maybe it kinda brings in some new perspective. I don't know.
Or they could go with the good old "if you sacrifice privacy for security you will have neither" - Benjamin Franklin
