I saw today the infamous pop-up of YouTube again that they will block the video player after 2 more videos if I keep using uBlock Origin. ** Google.

On iOS, I’ve discovered that I can uninstall the YT app, set Firefox Focus as my default browser, and then use PocketTube linked to my YT account to open a group playlist, and it plays in FF Focus without ads… so far.

@mateomaui@reddthat.com This was in Firefox on my desktop machine. ~~I don't have iOS but under Android I installed ReVananced works great! https://revanced.net/youtube-revanced (it also needs microG: https://revanced.net/microg)~~

EDIT: https://revanced.app/ is the only official site.

revanced.app is the real site

Yes, I use that on my Android tablet.

I can still use PocketTube to generate a group playlist, then tell it to open that list in Revanced and it works even better with the included SponsorBlock etc.

So I have a option on both platforms that starts with PocketTube as a playlist launcher, with the iOS side restricted to only adblocking. Which is fine for me, because I rarely watch vids on my phone.

And the only place I’m logged in anywhere is in PocketTube.

edit: although I got Revanced from revanced.app… not sure if there’s a difference

hmmm… looks like I did the DIY method with revanced.app using an older YT version, and revanced.net is an updated oob package. Maybe I’ll update.

edit2: correction: I’m logged into my account on a different web browser entirely, in case I want to subscribe to a channel or whatever

No don't! revanced.app is the only official site

[–] mateomaui@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank you! Was still debating it, do you know what’s up with that other site?

[–] Automated_Footprint@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Don't know maybe they modify the app with malware. Better avoid

@Automated_Footprint@sh.itjust.works @mateomaui@reddthat.com

For completeness. Here are all the fake sites.

@Automated_Footprint
@mateomaui so what did I just installed? I went for the "Revanced Youtube Extended" I guess.

[–] Automated_Footprint@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Neither Revanced nor Revanced extended will give you premade Youtube APKs. You have to use one of their methods (manager app or from pc) and build it yourself. That's how they get away from takedowns.

There’s also yattee for iOS, which works with invidious and Piped too https://github.com/yattee/yattee
