Some of you need to embrace Usenet. Never have to worries about power tripping admins on Torrent sites.
mh, pls tell me more
You need a Usenet provider, an indexer, and a Usenet downloading App.
I've been using Usenet Hosting for a long time now and haven't had any problems with them. Indexers are bit harder to come by. I think Drunkenslug is the go to these days, not sure about others.
You know.. that's not a bad idea, I just need a general tracker for dumb stuff that's now allowed on my niche trackers such as cams, Usenet would be perfect for that.. time to go down the rabbit hole and figure it all out again lol
Just a heads up that you probably shouldn't install games/software from usenet. Pretty much anyone can upload anything they want to an indexer, and it's usually the same thing that gets mirrored to other indexers as well. For movies/tv this generally doesn't end up to be a problem but for anything you execute it could be dangerous
For software I recommend you sign up to m0nkrus and for games you can either be safe with fitgirl-repacks.site or find a way into GazelleGames
Getting into GGn might be tricky, but it’s definitely worth it and plenty of FL. Also very active even some obscure content gets regular seeders.
For software, maybe add DigitalCore to that list. It’s better to use a site dedicated to software (like m0nkrus :3) then something like a general tracker with loose upload rules.
Is Usenet free? I was under the impression that there is a monthly fee attached to it
Strictly-speaking, Usenet doesn't have to be commercial, but while it was once typical for ISPs, universities, and other institutions to bundle Usenet service, now it typically is not, and so for most people, commercial Usenet access is really the only realistic alternative.
There's a monthly fee but it's not much. I'm on a $20/yr plan from Newshosting.
Oh damn, I didn't know it wast that cheap. Do you get access to everything with that? Like apart from movies and TV, does it also have like niche software, obscure movies or lesser known books and such ? Also, what about hosting? In the past I had a good seedbox/VPS that I was paying $20/month for that I could use to maintain ratio on private trackers as well as host my own plex server. Would I have to spend more on my own server in addition to Usenet or is streaming available for Usenet?
You would still need a server to host your Plex. Usenet is just the source of your files. You would use a downloader like SABnzbd to download and unpack your files. You can then point Plex to those files if you wanna access them on your Plex.
The only thing that changes when you switch from torrent to usenet is how the files are downloaded. The same way you can torrent at home, you can also download from usenet at home. It's just that if you have a server, you can offload all the downloading and unpacking to the server, and you can also use Plex to share it with your friends, etc.
Sometimes, but it's hit or miss.
There's no hosting fees. You don't seed. You just download.
I dunno about streaming but downloads are wicked fast. My movies are usually up on Plex about 10 mins after I request them.
The cost is nominal and very much worth it compared to grinding private indexers and navigating their stupid rules.
