"This prime minister doesn't see it as a priority for this parliament to call for a royal commission to understand what is happening, to have such a significant prevalence of child sexual abuse within Indigenous communities," he said.

"These calls for a royal commission into the sexual abuse of Aboriginal children have been made without one shred of real evidence being presented.

The controversial intervention was launched by the Howard government in 2007, in response to media reporting and a public inquiry looking into child sexual abuse.

In a statement, the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory argued there have been enough inquiries into the situation facing young people in Indigenous communities.

"On the other hand, political grandstanding by those who actively campaigned against Aboriginal communities having a voice on matters that concern us can only be divisive and destructive."
