Why do downvotes affect karma, but upvotes don't? (kbin.social)

If I recall reading correctly, downvotes affect karma, but upvotes don't.

In case kbin introduces some kind of gamification rewarding system, isn't that counterintuitive, esoecially since both buttons are equally positioned?

And I was under the impression it was in relation to all other comments and votes, maybe a ratio in how quickly those came in. And when I checked other accounts why they have minus Karma, I couldn't find an answer and thought they might have deleted those replies or posts. So it turns out it is a very simple system. :D I hope this changes, because if downvotes have an effect and upvotes do not, then it's broken in my opinion. But I understand that the site has to become stable first.
