Maybe turn the puddles into undead minions, if I recall correctly there's a monster that is just flesh and organs reanimated

Your bones require enchantment for protection. It becomes a common practice for the area because of the prevalence of bone faes in the world. The enchantments are very prevalent in society, so the bone faes are starved and extra aggressive. Not having protection make you a very noticeable target and almost always means certain death.
The enchantment requires upkeep and only a few casters in the area can provide the enchantments. The initial enchantment is very expensive and requires special materials, so the enchanters offer payment plans to enable commoners to get the protection they need. If you miss too many payments, they have to repossess your bones.
Cue opera music.

A bone reposessor huh? An opera? Sounds like it could a bonetic opera, perhaps.

There's a movement for Universal Socialized Bone Enchantment Upkeep but the enchanters are making money and the alchemists who produce the special materials are making money, and the people mostly just want to get through the harvest, so even though this King or that sometimes talks about getting a functional program up and running, it's hard to believe that it's really going to happen, even though literally every other developed kingdom in the world has Universal Bone Enchantment Upkeep.
