I subscribed to Aussie Enviro and maybe that bird I saw was an eastern koel. It has the spots I saw but also has the ‘eyeliner’ stripe out from its eyes that I got a split second glimpse of. It did have a loud piercing call (which was what caught my attention in the first place) but I’ve forgotten the exact sound.
Maybe I can buy some cheap binoculars and stalk birds through my bedroom window
The Bird of the Year poll is running on the Guardian at the moment if you're into birds, you can vote for your favs.
I would be ecstatic if we get koels here. Their calls are one of the things I miss most from home.
UWU
I’m not 100% sure. I like birds but don’t really know many and the times I see anything unusual they’re so fast.
It was yelling at my cat through the window and when I went to take a look it booked it
if they are truly there they will start waking you up to 3 hours before sunrise with their signature oh-OOH calls in increasingly high tones until their voice cracks
Back where I grew up people despise those birds for being such irritating alarm clocks lol. The subreddit gets UWU bird hate threads every so often.
Still prefer them to wattle birds though tbh
It wasn't this one was it?
Honeyeaters can be brownish and have the eyeliner stripe.
The streak was similar, but I strongly remember the spots. They made me curious about what the bird was
