I'm pretty sure he knows the difference. It's hard to score political points with the truth
So he's appealing to ignorant people for votes?
Polling 41% would suggest itβs been working so Iβm not sure why he would stop
There are lots of ignorant one issue voters.
Most people are some combination of Ignorant and apathetic, so a politician (of any stripe) usually has more luck saying something snappy and quotable rather than making some long thoughtful nuanced remark.
