If we assume free will (which I doubt, but let's assume anyway) he could have attempted to

  • avoid draft
  • surrender
  • shoot his commanding officers

all of which would have prevented this outcome at least. Some of them might have led to him living.

For centuries citizens of various countries hadn't a choice and had to fight russian oppressors except for russians themselves who always comply with all the shit they are told to do. This nation is beyond any rescue.
