There are still polygamous mormon sects and families - even within Utah (though it's LDS policy to excommunicate them).
The practice officially stopped in 1890 because it was going to prevent Utah from being admitted into the Union, and according to the main-line church "the standard doctrine of the church is monogamy". It's religion though, so there's no shortage of adherents to the old ways.
