Sadly Bill Clinton and Tony Blair backed Putin initially. It's not totally the people's fault.

Bill was President up until 2001 and Putin gained power only 2 years earlier. At the time there was no reason not to support him. He was a freely elected leader. But that was 2 decades ago and a whole lot of things changed since then.
