How to Properly Switch Distros? (social.tath.link)

I've been using PopOS! using KDE for a while now, and although I like it, I want to use the kubuntu backports, because there are a number of truly great features that I can't access, including features as simple as multicursor in Kate.

As such, I want to switch to kubuntu. My first step will be moving /home to a different partition from /. This won't be that bad, and I should have done it this way in the first place. Once I have this done though, what is the right process to change distros? I understand that I will need to reinstall most programs and drivers, but can this be done simply? Is apt clone the right thing for this? How can I carry over all my settings from Pop to kubuntu? It wouldn't be a truly massive pain to move things over, but it would be time consuming.

Advice would be appreciated! Thanks much!

Thanks! Yeah I have only a few changes to /etc and /opt. So I will need to reinstall everything in the end? Or just things that install into / rather than /home for some reason?

The exact structure can be different with different distros. When I used arch a decade ago, all config basically went into /etc/rc.conf IIRC, debian/Ubuntu never did that. I don't know pop OS and haven't used kubuntu in a while, so I can't say anything about that. Just be aware that you may have to redo some configuration. Also, you will have to reinstall basically everything except for some wine apps or so that are stored in /home
