Yes. However the materialist argument is not easy to disregard either.
"If the material conditions that give rise to capitalism aren't changed then capitalism won't be overcome"
An example that doesn't do historic materialism justice but that serves as an illustration: There is a correlation of violence and extreme inequality in a society. If you share the materialist interpretation you have to alleviate inequality if you want to bring about less violence.
I get how you see necessity for a transitory socialist state until you have trained capitalists that they can't exploit anymore
