We will see iterations with high magnification sniper setups too. It will take a lot more precision, but that is just a machine generation thing and as we see with the quadcopter s and sea drones, these generations go fast.
Those already exist. But there isn't a machine yet that can replace infantry, which is why some of scariest technologies coming up are the smart fire control systems on infantry rifles.
Soldiers identify the targets they want to hit, get their rifle in position, aim, but the gun fires itself when it's calculated it's best chance of hitting the target.
Yeah, the Dutch military has ordered a bunch of these for testing against drones too.
Should I tell him?
I'm going to tell him.
We've had remote weapons turrets with high accuracy in the thousands of meters for 20 years.
Yeah but these is a difference between small application and fringe systems vs small garage style assembled quickly iterated solutions that are deployed stand alone on the battlefield.
Stuff like missile defence systems are scary accurate but cost a lot, these turrets in the article are more acing to stuff you used in a shooter game... Just toss your little buddy in the hallway for some extra cover.. or on a rooftop as an autonomous sniper.
Yup. We've had them for 20 years. It started as a vehicle mount with a .50 married to a CLU. Then moved to tracked robots about as high as your knee, running a thermal and a 240. They haven't been widely deployed because the US hasn't been in a large scale defensive situation like Ukraine.
In this case I was imagining a suppressed semi auto with dead aim at 1000+ m guarding open fields and approaches. AFK sniper bot
Why though? I can single fire an MG if I need to and the belt allows for far more ammo before we have to expose ourselves or bring it back to reload it. Suppressors exist for .30 cal barrels and 240's absolutely range 1,000m.
Sure.. I didn't say my imagination was a good one. Thanks for keeping up with me.
