You used to be able to hold ALT, and your mouse would unlock and you could mouse over your abilities and read about them. You could also ping the map to communicate with teammates with ALT. You can still hold ALT and press the number keys to upgrade your abilities, but ALT doesn't let you mouse over stuff anymore. You can still unstick the mouse with TAB, but that brings up the whole scoreboard UI. Why did Valve straight up remove a functionality from the game?

That was patched today.

Changes to Scoreboard (TAB) and Extra Info (ALT) Previously there was a lot of crossover between the TAB and ALT modes during gameplay. In this update we have separated the behavior of these two modes to better serve different functions. The keys used for each of these modes can be swapped within Keybinds Settings.

Scoreboard (TAB):

  • Enables cursor mode
  • Displays Scoreboard
  • Displays Damage Summary
  • Allows minimap ping and draw

Extra Info (ALT):

  • No longer enables cursor mode
  • Quick-upgrade Abilities (ie. ALT+1) each of these can be individually remapped
  • Can now more easily map ALT as an Alternate Cast button
  • Displays extra information on HUD (ie. Zipline Speed Boost Cooldown) - we plan to expand upon this in future updates

You don't have to to use alt+number to upgrade, just press tab instead. Or rebind it.

I've been avoiding alt because it meant camera input would stop, now I can actually upgrade shit mid fight faster, when before I was long pressing the ability keys to unlock abilities mid-fight to use them.

I don't like bringing up the scoreboard just to upgrade my abilities, it's too much visual clutter. We had functionality and the developers removed it. They didn't even add a toggle, they just decided that the way I play the game is wrong. I don't like taking options away from players, especially when it comes to UI, which can be very important when it comes to visual disorders such as colourblindness or autism.

Ok. And I'm telling you it ADDS functionality I was missing.

Clicking the abilities wasn't good UX, as it's something you may have to do mid-combat, where you can't interrupt aiming.

I didn't say it doesn't add functionality. I said it removes functionality. It can do both. You're treating this like an argument, but I don't see any disagreement except that we have differing personal preferences. A toggle would make us both happy.

I know. And it isn't. I'm telling you there's an upside, and a reason it was done this way. That it isn't 100℅ "ass".

I'm not against a setting that'd make us both happy.

I'm against calling it "ass", hence painting a picture that there's nothing here someone might want, and can be reverted in full without drawback.

This change coming without double binding for the affected functions was ass. Tab+1 worked, you didn't have to click the abilities (it seems like you think you did)

No. My problem wasnt that you had to click the ability, my problem was that you'd lose camera input for a moment.
