The US had/has a bunch of fraternal societies. Most of them weren't racist, at least any more than anyone was in those times. They were mostly social/drinking clubs with a few fun or silly rituals thrown in. Groups like the Shriners and Freemasons fall under this category. The places they gathered are referred to as Lodges.

I'm mostly referring to the part when they were founded. I am not familiar with the stuff involving the supreme court. Though it does seem sus.
