A couple of months ago, I promissed my 8yo that I would get him a PC so that he could play with his friends, then the little devil on my shoulder said 'Give him your Steam Deck and set it up with Windows or even better dual boot once it comes out, and voila, instant gaming PC, besides how much compute power does an 8yo need? Also, you'll now be able to get the 1TB OLED SteamDeck without the missus busting your balls on why do you need two Steam Decks'

Fast forward to today, I made the order this morning, but feeling buyers remorse.

I formated my now old Steam Deck, and set up my kid with 27'' monitor, mouse & keyboard and plugged it on ye old docking station, set him up with his own Steam account, created my Steam Family...and he is not playing games, I thought he was going to be more excited about being able to game on his own now - which adds to my buyers remose, was this whole circus really needed?

Someone tell me I did the right here!!!

I’m 42, USA. Bought the OLED 1T deck so that I could play games with my son, who is stationed in Eastern Europe. (Mostly Diablo 4 with him.) I didn’t grow up with a gaming rig or console and am just not really good at this. I do work in IT and know my way around computers and networks and pen-testing so I at least have that going for me.

So I’ve noticed that a lot of the Steam shooter-based games I’ve purchased have the easier “enjoy the story” option, which is probably more suited to my style of play at the moment. Does selecting that mode make me an entire phony in the gaming world? Yes, I do like the solo campaigns to be a little more forgiving because that’s more conducive to keeping my interest, but I also don’t want to be a giant bitch about it either. I’d love to hear the general consensus on this.

Since getting the Deck it’s been my go-to for gaming now, despite having a decent gaming PC hooked up to both my desk and TV.

I still game at my desk sometimes, since my wife and I LAN game together for co-op, and my monitor is a 21:9 ultrawide which I like, but somehow the TV experience just hasn’t been the same. It’s weird, I’ve got a nice 5.1 setup, LG OLED 55”… you’d think it’d be great, and it is, but I’m just not feeling it compared to just chilling and playing on handheld.

Seems to be a common experience I gather, reading posts here.

Everyone asks what you're playing, but no one asks you about your next game. So what are you going to play after your current game?

I'm guessing a Zen 6 + RDNA 6 custom SoC (like the current Van Gogh), circa 2026/27, right around the timeframe when the next generation Xbox is being rumored to launch first (also, with a handheld SKU this time), and a year before the PlayStation 6.

This might coincide with the PC release of GTAVI, even be beneficial as a marketing tool for the SD-II and be a frame of reference for performance, but since R* DGAF about SD, or Linux in general, it's highly unlikely.
