Hi,

As we might all know ( Early adopter of Lemmy ). Lemmy has been (also) made to give an alternative to the censor kingdom of Reddit ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemmy_(software)

And further more Lemmy is fLOSS 😍

Great ! but watch out ! we don't want that Lemmy take the same path as Reddit did ! ( hopefully this is limited as it run as a ~Federated model )

Anyways, I believe to avoid censorship and jeopardize users privacy the following should be considered by Instance admins and moderators.

  • Avoid as possible a mandatory email to register Doing so is not reducing spam or whatever you're afraid ! It's limiting users to create account that preserve their anonymity ! If you don't know why anonymity is important I'll suggest you to dig this website to start with https://www.laquadrature.net/en/support/#chiffrement BTW if I couldn't be anonymous, I wouldn't write any post on Lemmy, as I'm not living in a free country !! Look on other instances some admin have found clever way to circumvent bots without the need of an email.

  • Also Lemmy don't require too much of moderation ! as any user can use the block feature in their options so you should not censor content in behave of others !

If the freedom of expression is limited to the ideas that we like, it is not freedom of expression. Noam Chomsky.

Cheers,

Hi all 👋

Here with a small guide for the Eternity app for Lemmy,
on how to setup your own custom filters,
so you can weed out unwanted content 🙂

Motivation:
I was getting sick of my feed being bombarded with war related content..
So in this guide, that's what we'll be filtering out.

Guide:
=> Open Eternity app
=> Tap Hamburger menu icon (Top left)
=> Tap Settings
=> Tap Post Filter
=> Tap Plus icon (Bottom right)
=> Fill in: Post Filter Name = No War
=> Fill in: Title: Exclude Keywords =
Gaza,Hamas,Israel,Palestine,Pakistan,Ukraine,Russia
=> Tap Save icon (Top right)
=> Tap new No War filter
=> Tap Apply To
=> Tap Plus icon (Bottom right)
=> Tap Subscribed
=> Tap Plus icon (Bottom right)
=> Tap Search
=> Tap Back Arrow (Top left)
=> Close / re-open Eternity app

This was just an example,
adjust as desired + can create filters for whatever you (don't) want 😉

I want to talk about Czech topics with someone other than my alter-egos... How do i get people to join?

I tried to lobby on Reddit, with predictable results.

Hi all,

I accidentally used the same email address to sign up to another Lemmy instance, and I haven't received the email to verify my account. I tried logging in with the credentials I signed up with and nothing happens.

Does anyone know if it's possible to sign up with the same email address on different instances? I've tried using the contact support but I'm getting a 502 Bad Gateway.

Like there is the Official Mastodon app for Mastodon, and Element app for Matrix, which app is considered the most official lemmy app for Android [possibly also for ios]

Or atleast, the app which supports most(if not all) the features available in Lemmy

When I click to subscribe some groups it goes to Pending stage for a long time before it gets to subscribed.

Is that because the mods accepted my subscription request or is it taking long time?

I'm new to lemmy and today I tried 4 iOS apps (Memmy, Mlem, Liftoff and Lemmios). None of them seem to support native link sharing. Isn't it a typical use case to post based on a link? I'm confused because I thought that would be one of the 1st features any lemmy client would offer. Please enlighten me where I got it wrong.

It is constantly being well developed.

  • Top: is based on votes or comments or both?
  • What is the difference between Hot, Active, New, Most Comments, New Comments?
12

This might come across as a silly question, but I literally see no option when editing a Community to change moderators. Only that I can leave the mod team.

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure this is the right community for this, but I want to announce my new project: Infinity for Lemmy.

Basically, this is a fork of the Infinity for Reddit application, modified to get it to work with Lemmy.

But I must remind you to temper your expectations as this project is still in its infancy. It has some basic features already in place, but there’s a lot more to be accomplished.

What Infinity for Lemmy Can Currently Do:

• Browse posts • Handle multiple accounts • Upvote and downvote posts

What Infinity for Lemmy Cannot Do (Yet):

• Load comments • Handle subscriptions • Search for posts, users, or communities • Write posts or comments • Send private messages • And many more

So, while Infinity for Lemmy is in its current state not a feature-rich client, but it’s a promising start.

For those interested, here’s the link to my git repository: https://codeberg.org/Bazsalanszky/Infinity-For-Lemmy

I invite everyone to contribute in whatever capacity they can, whether it be through coding, reporting bugs, suggesting features, or even just providing feedback and insights. Let’s shape the future of Infinity for Lemmy together!

I'm looking for a way to create a custom feed of multiple Lemmy communities. Reddit does something similar, calling it "custom feeds" or some clients refer to it as "channels." I've attached an image of my custom reddit feeds from the Satelite desktop app.

Use case: You could combine a bunch of news communities into a single custom feed, so you can have a feed that's filled with news.

Sometimes I want to view just news, but I don't want to unsubscribe from all the non-news communities I follow.

Is there any Lemmy client that makes this possible? Currently I use Jerboa on Android.

FYI!!! In case you start getting re-directed to porn sites.

Maybe the admin got hacked?

If your instance is updated to version 0.18.1 (you can check the version at the bottom of the page).
You can find some new themes under profile settings.

Why YSK: I've seen several commenters asking if there were specific bots such as RemindMe

However, there are so many bots already on mastodon that will federate with us! Check out botsin.space, a masto-instance specifically made for hosting bots

Just tag @remindme@mstdn.social and say the time after (I recommend you not do it on this post unless you have an actual reason though as it could spam their servers)

I shared bits and pieces of this before, but it's officially up and running now: https://www.search-lemmy.com/

This is an enhanced search engine for Lemmy. With a few primary goals:

  • You can choose a preferred instance. After choosing what your primary instance is, and performing a search ALL links will open in that instance.
  • This aims to be a replacement for using site:reddit.com in Google, but just for the fediverse.
  • You can filter the search results by:
    • Instance -- This will filter the results to only show communities that belong to a particular instance. Just type something like instance:lemmy.wrold or instance:https://lemmy.world/. This is separate from your preferred instance, such that you can search for posts on lemmy.world while still opening them on lemmy.ml.
    • Community -- You can refine the search by a specific community. You use the same syntax that you'd use here community:[!fediverse@lemmy.world](/c/fediverse@lemmy.world).
    • Author -- Similar to the above you can also filter by a specific author such as: author:@marsara9@lemmy.world.
  • The entire thing is open-source. You can view the code and even host your own instance... See more details here: https://github.com/marsara9/lemmy-search.

NOTE: This only supports Lemmy instances for now. Other fediverse type instances may be in the future depending on how this works out.

I've been working on this over just the last few weeks, so it hasn't had a chance to crawl much of the fediverse yet. For now it only supports lemmy.world and lemmy.ml but other preferred-instances will come online as time goes by.

If anyone finds any bugs, and I'm sure you will, or if anyone has any suggestions PLEASE raise an issue on GitHub for me to track. Lastly, if anyone wants to help contribute please feel free to reach out.

**NOTE TO SERVER ADMINS: You can prevent your site from being crawled by adding lemmy-search to your robots.txt for the user-agent.search` to your robots.txt for the user-agent.

Near the end of my little 'Euro comics' rant, you may notice how I tried to slip in an offsite link, in this case from my instance, lemm.ee.

Now it looks like it... got blocked, maybe? See the before & after here.

Mateys-- Am I going crazy, or is this something we're going to need to work around, in future?

EDIT: As stated below, re-editing the message (even with the very same link) cleared up the problem. Still, I could see Reddit trying to block content from the Fediverse, the more the FV grows.

Changelog v1.2.0

  • Add rewrite support for posts/comments
  • Try to not rewrite federation links

Description

Lemmy Universal Link Switcher, or LULs for short, scans all links on all websites, and if any link points to a Lemmy instance that is not your main/home instance, it rewrites the link so that it instead points to your main instance. Currently only works for community/user links.

Also works on Firefox Android with the Tampermonkey extension!

Features

  • Rewrite links to Lemmy posts/comments to point to your home instance. Only after hovering over them, because getting home posts/comments links require communicating with the Lemmy servers, and we don't want to spam the servers.

  • Instantly rewrite all links of communities or users to Lemmy/kbin on all websites everywhere to your new instance! The rewritten links will have an icon next to it, and hovering/touching the icon will show you the original link, allowing you to go there if you want to.

  • If you are already on a page that has a corresponding page on your home instance, a link will automatically be added to the page header.

Home Instance Setup

Simply visit the Lemmy instance you want to set as your home while the script is active. You will be asked if you want to set this instance to your home instance:

If you initially set your home instance wrong or just want to change it, no worries - simply go to your settings on your new home instance and press the button for it!

Coming soon

  • Rewrite kbin post/comment links
  • Better rewriting support for kbin community/user urls (e.g. sort options are currently ignored)
  • Nicer tooltip styling (fit into page theme)
  • Signify that "Show at home" button is loading for posts/comments
23

From what I understand, federation doesn't currently fetch historic actions, so if your community was fetched onto a new remote instance after you featured/pinned the post, then it won't appear like it's pinned on that instance.

Quick guide on how to use this python script (on Windows) to copy subscribed communities to another account.

  1. Install Python.
  2. Go to repo page. Click Code >> Download ZIP
  3. Extract the ZIP file
  4. Open the extracted folder
  5. Open config.ini file with the text editor (e.g., Notepad) and type your credentials and corresponding instance links (and save it)
  6. Click on the path field within the folder, type cmd and press enter to open up Command Prompt within that folder.
  7. Type lemmy_migrate -c config.ini , press enter.
  8. Wait for it to finish.

The issue: You find a link to a neat lemmy community on some random instance. In order to subscribe, you have go to your instance, search for the community, find it, open it, subscribe...blah!

The fix: Use a simple browser bookmark to go to your home instance and open the federated community in one click.

This works through modifying the URL of the page your on and puts the host name (e.g. lemmy.ml) after an "@" symbol after the community and then changing the host name to your own, hard-coded one.

How to steps:

  1. Create a bookmark in your browser and then "Edit" it.

  2. Change the URL to this text (modify the "lemmy.world" bit with whatever your home instance is):

    For lemmy.world users: javascript:(function(){location.href="https://lemmy.world/c/"+location.href.match(/(?:.*)\/c\/(.*(?=\/)|.*$)/i)[1]+"@"+location.host.toString();})();

    For lemmy.ml users: javascript:(function(){location.href="https://lemmy.ml/c/"+location.href.match(/(?:.*)\/c\/(.*(?=\/)|.*$)/i)[1]+"@"+location.host.toString();})();

  3. Change the name of the bookmark to whatever you want. Mine is named "lemmy.world".

  1. You're all set!

Now, from any federated community main feed page, click on the bookmark and you'll magically be taken to the same community on your local instance. Magic!

Disclaimers: The community must be federated with your instance. You can only do this from a URL that has the community in url (e.g. not from a post or anything).
