Well, folks, I’ve been lurking in the Home Assistant community for a year now, watching you all gleefully tear apart your homes like kids with new Lego sets. Meanwhile, I’ve been clinging to my “dumb” house like a captain going down with his ship. “Is this some sort of collective madness?” I wondered, picturing my poor appliances cowering in fear of being “upgraded.”

But after months of internal debate (and a few more sky-high electricity bills), I’ve finally cracked. Home Assistant, you win. I’m ready to join the cult of the connected home. So here I am, about to embark on my own remodeling odyssey. Buckle up, because I’m documenting every triumph and disaster of this total home reboot right here!

Picture this: my current abode is a shrine to the “good old days” – you know, when we had to walk uphill both ways just to flip a light switch. Every single device demands my personal attention like a needy toddler. “Turn me on!” “Turn me off!” It’s exhausting. I’m pretty sure I burn more calories racing around the house managing switches than I do at the gym.

And let’s not even talk about my electricity bill. It’s less of a bill and more of a monthly mugging. I’m convinced my appliances are secretly throwing wild parties when I’m not looking, because how else could it be this high? I have no clue which devices are the energy-guzzling culprits, but I’m determined to find out.

So, here we go. I’m trading in my running shoes for a smart home hub. Will it be a smooth transition to a life of automated bliss, or will I end up tangled in a web of smart plugs and broken dreams? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for the thrilling (or possibly horrifying) details of my smart home transformation!

I've found some articles n posts, that mention privacy concerns regarding robot vacuum: Robot vacuums can record, collect user data.

Are they truly spying on us? im really afraid of it.

Please let me know your thoughts and recommend to me some good options for pet hair currently!!

Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone! After trying out a few different setups, I think I’ve finally landed on a Home Assistant dashboard that I’m happy with (for now!). I’m now running it on a 15” touchscreen display hooked up to a Raspberry Pi 5 8G with Fully Kiosk running on LineageOS, and it’s been working like a charm.

The Journey:

Echo Show 15: After giving up on a iPad Mini that I had for a couple of years, I started off by running my Home Assistant dashboard on the Echo Show 15 for over a year. It was convenient, but I got fed up with having to use workarounds with the Silk Browser (ever since Amazon made it rather difficult to side load apps), moreover as I added more camera feeds and animations, it started to slow down and freeze-up.

Android Tablet: Next, I tried a ‘cheap’ 15-inch Android tablet, hoping it would be a good fit, but it turned out to be pretty dodgy, slow and low res.

Android Digital Signage Display: I then came across this 15.6 inch Digital Signage Display, which seemed like a good alternative. It runs Android out of the box, and getting Fully Kiosk running on it was a cinch. However, as I added more to the dashboard, it started to feel somewhat slow as well. Still, it’s a decent option for those looking for a simple Android-based setup.

Mele PCG02 with Debian (Linux): I then tried chromium-kiosk on Debian, running on a Mele PCG02 (Intel N4000, 4G). This setup worked quite well, but I felt that the experience wasn’t as good as with Fully Kiosk.

Mele PCG02 with BlissOS (x86_64 Android): To get the Fully Kiosk experience, I switched to BlissOS on the PCG02. It worked, but I encountered issues with WebRTC, and I suspect I was missing an OS component. I didn’t want to spend too much time debugging that.

Raspberry Pi 4b with LineageOS (Android): I then tried a Raspberry Pi 4b running LineageOS and Fully Kiosk, but it was just too slow to handle my dashboard.

Final Setup - Raspberry Pi 5 8G: Finally, I switched to the Raspberry Pi 5 8G. This did the trick in terms of flexibility, speed and performance, and it’s running Fully Kiosk on LineageOS flawlessly. I could probably put something else on it.

The Final Setup:

Raspberry Pi 5 8G

15” Touchscreen Display

Fully Kiosk Browser

LineageOS for Raspberry Pi 5.

Links to the other hardware I tried:

Mele PCG02 (Intel N4000, 4G)

15.6 inch Digital Signage Display

If anyone is thinking about making the switch, feel free to ask me any questions! 😊

My work is far from home. There must be a way other than dragging that circle across a big map to set my work zone. Newbie to HA ? I gave up and came here to ask for help

Hey, I just got a Phillips Hue White Ambiance 1600 and found out that you can't set repeating schedules on it using Bluetooth. The want you to buy a bridge in order to do that. So, I was wondering, can I use Home Assistant with a Zigbee USB dongle to do this instead? Specifically, I want to know if I can have it repeat the gradual brightening (from off to fully on) over half an hour every morning.

Thank you!

GAME CHANGER: I finally learned how to open up and discover the hidden entities that the manufacturers don’t enable for some stupid reason but are actually available in Tuya Developer, even when they say they aren’t.

I’m not talking about the ones that HAAS shows as hidden or disabled, HAAS doesn’t even see these entities until you enable them manually - instructions below.

My devices have so many more entities now!

As a beginner, I search a lot on here and talk to ppl, and seems many experienced enthusiasts look down on the Home Assistant Green. Why do people look down on HA Green, because it's not powerful? I got the Home Assistant Green over a week ago and love it! Didn't have to deal with installing HA on any machines. It was plug and play for so many items. Afterwards, I could spend my energy tinkering with other items to install, Add-ons, etc and that was relatively not bad with all the instructions, YouTube videos and communities like this.

The speed of the HA Green's processor seems fast and enough RAM - it runs all the automations quickly and it's almost instant when I want to check on all the sensors. Have Emporia Vue3 integrated and checking on power usage constantly also. I guess the only thing is I've already used 20% of the storage space so not sure how much I'll need in the future?

I've got smart bulbs everywhere in the house.

We've implemented a "don't touch any lightswitch" rule as an intermediate step.

I'd love to get recommendations (supported by HA of course) that can replace traditional switches.

I've got the toggle switches and some 3 way toggle switches. I'm looking for a simple on/off replacement. Dimming / running scenes etc is more than I need. I'm open to replacing the toggle style with a rocker style if it makes it easier.

Zigbee preferred, but not a deal-breaker. I've got Wifi, Zigbee and ZWave running in the house already.

Most switches are in 3-4 gang boxes if that helps.

Thanks!

Hi!

Did you know with the Home Assistant Scrape integration it is possible to integrate online website data to a sensor in your Home Assistant and show it on your dashboard!

Read here how this works, based on an example to get the actual energy price from the providers website:

Happy scraping!

Build this dashboard, and it's been great! I don't even open the apps for the solar or battery any more, it's all just right here. I'm on the Octopus Intelligent Go tarrif, so it really helps me see if i need to give the battery a little bump charge overnight to augment the solar. For context, it's about 10pm here, so only another hour and a half till the cheap rates kicked in. I've left space to add my EV charger breakdown too, once the new charger is fitted. The battery setup has a separate terminal for the EV so that the battery knows not to drain it, and I can get that information in here, too.

This is the latest disappointing development in the saga regarding the custom integration HomeAssistant-Tapo-Control:

Pretty disappointing to say the least.

When I first got the Tapo cameras they seemed great and the integration worked fantastically. The developer has been really solid here, making sure that the integration plays nice with TPLink's cloud.

But there have been issues since April and, while they have been cooperative, they are really taking their time with such a small thing.

BTW their response tells me that they don't understand security well.

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker first time poster.

While getting into the home automation world I found it quite difficult to see what was available and actively supported etc. I felt this could be improved and also help reduce the barrier of entry to new comers - who doesn’t want a bigger community of various technical abilities!

So over the past year or so I have been slowly working on a passion project that would allow users to easily search and find awesome home automation projects and allow developers to self manage their projects!

Introducing

HomeAssistant Store, Themes & Integrations or HASTI for short. Allows users to easily discover various cool home automations, developers to add and share their own projects to the community. Users can also add projects they think should be on the platform as well! (Don’t worry developers - you have full control over projects you or others have added)

The most important part is users can discover projects by:

  • searching for phrases, key words or projects
  • search by the tagging system
  • filter results that have or don’t have certain tags, install types, IoT classification, Rating, Activity & Popularity

Please note this project is in beta and still has lots of things to fix, add or generally improve! The best part is this entire platform is open source! So anyone can contribute to the longevity of this community project

You can find the repository at:

Please add any ideas, bugs or general questions etc in the repo discussions:

If you've been debating between using API calls with OpenAI, Claude, or Gemini, versus running a local private AI model, this is the moment to try the local route. Qwen 2.5 paired with Ollama is the first local model I've found reliable enough to replace API-driven options. It handles everything smoothly, and I’ve made it my default voice assistant at home. If you’ve been waiting for a local solution that actually works, this is it!

Currently running the default 7b Q4 from ollama :
