I need a new music MP3 player app, that can be used offline as well. I used Free Music app but I can't use anything else when I start the music because it blocks the screen so it would be a nice plus to have, no screen blocking. I'm about to go on a long journey where I can't access the internet and need of a new app. I couldn't use Muzio Player, nor Spotune.

Hi all,

I am the top mod of r/fossdroid currently. I have been on a long hiatus.

I'm looking forward to working with the only currently active mod in continuing to moderate this community and hopefully being able to make things even better!

It will take me some time to learn, and I'm looking forward to feedback from the community.

I left back when third party Reddit apps were effectively banned. I recently came back to Reddit as I have realized that every other social media (besides FOSS stuff) seems to be dogshit.

It may take me some time to be up to speed on current policies, so I will be reluctant to do any moderation tasks on my own besides obvious spam. In time, I look forward to being part of the mod team fully.

As some of you may know, I was added to the team 4 years ago, by the previous top mod. I'm not sure what happened to the previous team, and we fell out of contact a few years ago. It does not seem that u/NettoHikariDE is active at all on Reddit anymore.

TL;DR: I'm back, and looking forward to becoming part of the community again. I'm looking forward to working with u/ubertr0_n, and learning the ins and outs of the community!

It's never a good feeling to discover that one of your favorite apps has been discontinued or abandoned by the developer. I've been there myself, and I know how frustrating it can be to search for alternatives that may not offer the same features or functionality.

That's why I'm curious if you've come across any apps that were once discontinued but have since been revived or continued by someone else. I think this is a great question, as it's possible that some apps I thought were gone for good are actually still out there, being developed by someone new.

Hi,

I have been using Microsoft Launcher on Android for long time, mostly because it allows me to have the application list sorted with alphabetic separators, and a scroll bar that allows me to go directly to a specific letter.

I feel that this feature should be ultra basic and be here in every launcher, yet I couldn't find a single one having that (FOSS or non-FOSS).

What FOSS launcher have this feature ?

Thanks in advance for any answer, have a nice day.

I've been looking into f droid and there's typically pros and cons to everything and one thing I learned was if it's to good to be true then it probably is, how can apps like Apollo have free music, some with free movies, free services, ect... I mean what are they getting out of it? And what security downsides/risks are there... I mean all this FOSS stuff is cool and all but you're downloading an unknown app from a random developer and it just makes me feel a bit uneasy so I guess what I'm looking for Is assurance and to understand the pros and cons

With Smart EggTimer you can cook eggs perfectly.

The cooking time is calculated depending on

  • the air pressure or the geographic altitude
  • the desired consistency
  • the size of the egg
  • the start temperature

What's the idea for an app or something that you need, but cannot make yourself because of whatever reason? I've recently started learning Android again, and I want to create an app that people may find useful, so tell me your problems/requirements that doesn't already have a FOSS solution, or is outdated. If I believe myself to be competent enough, I'm ready to make it or collaborate on it.

Hey r/fossdroid community!

MJ PDF v2.2.0, my open-source PDF reader, is almost ready for official release, but I need your help with testing. This version focuses on improvements and stability. Here's a short summary of change log:

Short Change Log

  • Added support for Arabic, Chinese, Turkish, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, and Russian.
  • Introduced Always in Horizontal Mode option.
  • Added return button to search results, improved search result highlighting.
  • Added full support for password-protected and non-local PDF.
  • Added 'Reload PDF file' button setting.
  • Added an experimental setting to show a 'reload PDF file' button
  • Fixed issues with the back button not functioning in some cases.
  • Improved UI consistency with icon and text colors, and a more streamlined Full Screen Buttons layout.
  • Addressed many crash scenarios.
  • Updated to Android SDK, Gradle and many deps.

Note: Major updates to core libraries mark significant progress, resolving long-standing issues.

Exciting Update

While working on this version, I found a way to possibly add some of the top-requested features like Text Highlighting and Live Text Selection. It looks like I can get these done without too much hassle. However, I'm swamped right now, so I'm not sure when I'll start on these. I’ll keep you posted!

Thanks for being a part of this journey, and happy testing!

I'm just so impressed with the impulse download of whoBIRD from F-Droid. I'm not a bird girl, never really had an interest, but a random app download of "recognizing birds by their sounds" was one of the most fun 'trivial' app downloads I think I've ever made.

I have the best time now opening a window and checking what birds are making sounds around me. If I'm on a hike or a walk, and take the time to stop and listen, now I might just open the app and see what is around me. Again, if the devs are around on here, just a big thank you for something I never ever ever would have looked into. I won't ever be a passionate bird follower (is that the term?), but this app really made me happy.

Thanks! <3

Is there any app which mimics the google lens' image to image search? It would be nice if you could give some FOSS suggestions for android.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello everyone,

textbee.dev is an opensource and free sms-gateway for android devices

Here's a list of the main features:

  • SMS Sending: Whether it's notifications, two-factor authentication (2FA), one-time passwords (OTPs), alerts, CRM integration, e-commerce delivery notifications, or any other use case your app requires, textbee.dev enables you to send SMS directly from its dashboard or via its API.
  • Batch SMS: Leverage the API to send SMS messages in bulk, making it an efficient solution for mass communication.
  • SMS Receiving: Not only can you send SMS but you can also enable the receive SMS feature to retrieve messages you get via API or access them in your dashboard (Webhooks for real-time notifications are on the roadmap 😉 )
  • Free and Open-source: Being a free and open-source platform, you won't have to pay a single penny to use its services. Furthermore, you have the option to self-host your own instance, providing you with complete control and flexibility.

textbee is currently under active development and would appreciate your feedback and any feature requests you may have. Also feel free to contribute on github

Thank you for your interest, support and feedback.

I want to try out a smart watch but try to degoogle it or de-proprietize (is that a word?) the watch as much as possible. I'd like to find the watch with the most features possible, that can be custom ROMed. Any suggestions? Can devices like the Xaomi Mi Band 7 or 8 be flashed with custom ROM? Or the samsung watch?

Is Wasp OS the best open source ROM out there?

Just curious about any and all anecdotes about your experience with custom smartwatch devices.

Thanks!

Hi everyone! I'm doing my first ever post on Reddit to introduce my first open-source app, Material Notes. It is a very simple note-taking app, with the ability to create inline checklists, using Material Design and without internet permission.

It's not a revolutionary app at all, I did not try to reinvent anything. I just wanted an app to write simple text-based notes without formatting, that included inline checklists, and with a clean Material Design implementation (I couldn't find any note taking app that offers it).

Here are its main features:

  • Write text notes with inline checklists
  • Search, sort and pin your notes
  • Restore your notes from the bin
  • Share, backup and restore your notes
  • Choose a light or dark theme, including toggleable black background and Material You support
  • Never worry about you data, the app doesn't have any internet permission

You can find the source code on GitHub.

You can download it from the GitHub releases or from the Play Store.

Feel free to give me your honest opinion about my app here or in GitHub discussions or issues. I am a junior developer so I am still learning a lot, but I have wanted to contribute to the FOSS space for a long time ☺️

Breezy Weather and HeliBoard are now in the default repository of F-Droid! 🎉

Breezy Weather

HeliBoard

The iteration of Breezy Weather in the default F-Droid repo is slightly truncated, but it is fully free software/freedomware.

Enjoy the apps, and don't forget to donate to the projects to encourage continued development! ❤️
