Please suggest TTS / screen reader applications you use.

Does not actually require orbot. InviZible Pro works as well. That setting just expects a proxy host of 127.0.0.1 port 9050

The app at my gym sucks: there is no checklist of what exercises you have done and no tracking of how much weight you used. Plus, for whatever reason, it wants access to my location.

I've found a number of alternatives on F-Droid, but each of the six or so I tried was completely unusable (some seemed unfinished alphas, others are probably too old for my android version).

Is there one app that you use and would recommend?

What I'm looking for is:

  • At home: I setup my programs (different ones for different days)
  • At the gym: I can select a program, check off the exercises while I do them (the order I do them on depends on where there is fewer people at the gym), and log things like if I managed all the sets/reps, how much weight I used, and how long I exercised for (for things like the tapis roulant).
  • Bonus points if I can also track my weight in the same app, and if the app can export/sync the data or produce some kind of graphs/statistics based on it.

Thanks!

Not complianing about it since it gives us a good selection, but it is a trend I have been noticing lately.

I have using picsart for a long while now. I don't edit much but picsart has lots of features, but unfortunately the app is becoming more and more bloated and it's riddled with ads and stuff. So I was wondering if there was any good FOSS alternative. Thanks in advance.

Text Tools Pro is a text-expanding power utility that facilitates the sending of custom messages with a trigger.

It will type out phrases like omw = on my way! the current date in any format, or even stuff like in2h = time from now in 2 hours, or simply lol = 🤣

In short, Text Tools Pro, developed by a Sri Lankan student, will significantly improve your typing experience on Android; use it.

PS: here is what you need to enter to get the in2h stuff:

key: in2h
value: {{time_in_two_hours}}
var name: time_in_two_hours
var type: date
format: HH:mm
Offset: 7200

Can you guys suggest me some open source gesture typing library?

You can now use lemmy like you did reddit with infinity for reddit

This may be OT since strictly speaking it's about hardware... I trust it is ok to post it given the spirit of the community, but have my apologies and feel free to remove it if it's not.

I'm looking to replace my old Bose QC25, since they have recently died (after a long a fulfilling life), but it seems everything nowadays is bluetooth (which I don't mind) and require some proprietary app to turn ANC on/off (which I do mind... are physical buttons/switches become too expensive to include in your overpriced earbuds?).

Anyway... do you know of any headphones/earbuds that meet the following?

  1. can be powered via wire or have batteries that last 12+hrs (long-haul flights)
  2. have decent noise cancelling
  3. don't require me to install a apps or can be used with some open source app (possibly with full functionality and straightforward to setup)
  4. are not overly expensive (I have to buy 2 pairs and I'll only use them a few times a year when I fly)

Voyager for lemmy is now on F-droid! You don't need to setup a third party repo as its in the main repo

Edit: I'll just stick to Jeroba for now as the Voyager UI is painful for me personally

I use it a lot for photos, mainly for the quick filters

I have installed Davx5 from F-Droid, from IzzyOnDroid Repo. Today I have checked for updates with the Google playstore and the App was updated to the playstore variant. I thought this isn't possible? What's going on here?

I have the Guardian repo enabled, not the archive. Is the Torbrowser gone? Does anyone know more about this?

I still have it installed, but when making a guide on setting up GrapheneOS, I realized Torbrowser was not there

Edit: It seems to have vanished from the Guardian repo?

Here is the Torproject repo with always the latest stable and alpha.

Here is the izzyondroid site that I used to download the Guardian repos latest release, which is outdated

Here is the official fancy download site

Just for your info, this is the hash of the latest arm64 stable APK:

0512a00b30cff2fb5a158a11b8599f3b88fb8401

(I recommend Material files, has all sorts of checks integrated)

Aaand FFUpdater, which is normally only useful for downloading proprietary Browsers, can update it!

Recently I remember someone had made a post asking about apps that "unlock special things" on android, and this post is for all of you who want to unlock your android device to the max!

I wanted to share the link to the repository for each app but besides I'm tired of writing, there are apps that have migrated to Gitlab (like Droid-rec) and then back to Github and I really can't find the link to their repository and I really don't want to create a mess of missing links that don't work and apps without links to their repositories! If someone has time and manages to find the repository of each app please add it in the comments and I would really appreciate it. If you have Droid-ify make sure to enable Izzy's repository and you will be able to see absolutely every single app in this list.

AutoMute: Have you ever been sent a moaning video or opened a noisy video/audio and forgot you had left the multimedia audio on max by mistake? AutoMute allows you to mute your device's multimedia audio after a certain amount of time, and has different settings to customize.

Droid-Rec: Droid-Rec is undoubtedly the best app to record your screen on android, besides being considerably customizable it has the great feature of being able to record the internal audio of your device, unlike other apps that you need to use the microphone of your device for that and the audio ends up being disgusting.

Coffe: Have you ever needed to keep your screen on for a while but going to your system settings is a pain? Coffe allows you to change the automatic timeout of your screen with a single click from the tray (the buttons that appear where the notifications are) of your device, you can even make it never turn off at all.

RethinkDNS: RethinkDNS is an app that works as a VPN to provide a system level firewall (meaning that if an app has ads and you have the filter to remove ads, you may not see them anymore). Besides having functionalities to work as a proxy and a DNS changer, RethinkDNS has the absolutely great function to see the logs or pings of each app by IP, absolutely useful if you suspect that an app is doing something weird, and you can even cut its access to the internet in one tap.

OpenContacts: This app is an app that may not really fit in this list but it has a functionality that I'm sure many will love! Have you ever wanted to send a message to someone on Whatsapp or Telegram without having to add them to your contacts? OpenContacts is simply an app to manage and make calls but it also allows you to open phone numbers in Whatsapp or Telegram without adding a number to your contacts!

Termux: A simple shell for Android, basically a terminal emulator to execute commands. For me it is especially useful in different scenarios, for example, using ffmpeg to edit a video or using yt-dlp to download videos without needing a GUI.

URLCheck: URLCheck is an extremely useful app that opens automatically when you open a link, it allows you to shorten links or skip link shorteners, detect dangerous sites (you need a VirusTotal account) and even redirect your links to privacy related front-ends, like Piped.

Shizuku: Shizuku can be defined as a kind of "root" that uses the Android debugger mode to use adb commands without any kind of modification to your phone!

(IMPORTANT: To use some apps from the list below you need to have Shizuku or adb)

Droid-ify: With Shizuku active, Droid-ify (an F-Droid client, note that this one doesn't need Shizuku) allows you to activate the "Shizuku Installer" which allows you to update apps in the background or install them without interaction, just press "Install" and that's it, just like in the Playstore.

Canta: Canta is a special program in my opinion. Canta allows you to uninstall any app from your OS and gives you labels telling you if it is recommended to uninstall it or not, and also most apps have a description about why it is recommended to uninstall it. In my special case using a Samsung device I got rid of all Samsung bloatware and I can swear that my device is at least 30% faster overall.

aShell: aShell is an app that allows you to launch adb commands directly from your phone without the need to connect it to a PC, very convenient in my opinion.

LogFox: Have you ever had an app that crashes indescribably and you don't know why? LogFox allows you to save and record the logs of your whole system, including the apps you have installed and you can even set filters to save logs about a specific app and share it with its developer (you don't need Shizuku either, but you need adb and with aShell you can access it).

SystemUI Tuner: This app is an absolute gem that I never heard anyone talk about! It allows you to customize parameters of your android that your manufacturer doesn't let you, for example and for me the coolest: Move apps to SD memory.

SaverTuner: This app allows you to customize the battery saving mode of your device with different saving modes that really save a LOT of battery.

(Like logfox, you need an adb command for this app)

Implements support for waydroid in vso, this includes creating and deleting a waydroid container, as well as using fdroid repositories to install and search for applications.

There's a bunch of closed source ones, the best of which were brought by Adobe, but there's never really been a big open source effort.

GIMP say that the lack of separation between functionality and UI is why they're not behind an effort. That said they said they'd be happy to stick their name on an effort.

But this takes me back to my original question, why are there no open source photo editors, despite their popularity?

I've been using Quillnote for a long time now and this is a feature I've been sorely missing, are there other apps that can help me do the conversion?

VLC was once the best in class. Not only was it a great piece of legacy software, the Android team were so passionate that they took that reputation and all the expectations that go along with it and exceeded it.

But as time has gone on, it's just started to languish. If you attempt to rewind a few too many times, the video freezes and you get audio. You can't play a folder on a NAS without creating a playlist. You play a folder locally without VLC losing its place. Every time the screen goes off, it needs to scan the device anew. And despite being at the forefront of Holo Design and Material Design 1, it's yet to implement Material You.

It feels like VLC for Android has been forgotten... So what do people recommend as a replacement?

My "kinda new to me" Pixel 4a (I know its EOL and not new) is the fastest phone I currently have.

I run GrapheneOS on it, based on Android 13 with latest updates.

But also it has a hardened Kernel and Malloc, which may be the problem here.

In comparison: A Nokia 7+ with unofficial LineageOS based off Android 13. And a Google Nexus 5 or so, with some very old Android 8 or so.

OpenCamera works perfectly well on both the non GrapheneOS phones? But on my pixel, it loads extremely slowly, like 10s at least. Its pretty unusable.

OpenCamera is a weird project, I can imagine this is a memory overflow or something, so the hardened Malloc is the problem.

OpenCamera only has a SourceForge repo which is very weird. Do you use it and have an idea why this is happening?

Hello.

My use case: I'm an animator and I'd like to incorporate more rhythmic elements in my films.

On desktop I use Hydrogen drum machine, which works great for my purposes, but I'd like to be able to jart down some ideas when I'm away from my computer.

I have zero music production knowledge so something on the simpler side would be great. On f-droid there's Drum On!, but it doesn't allow exporting into a sound file, only to it's own format.

Hi guys out of curiosity does anyone know of a foss, local recorder app that does speech to text?

Closest I've seen is https://voiceinput.futo.org/ which relies on a local open ai whisper model. However unfortunatley this app only works as a keyboard.

I am pretty excited about this new release. The app is open source and seems to follow strict security standards.
