For Tia Dafnos, an associate professor at the University of New Brunswick, the records reinforce, at minimum, the optics that national security police resources are being used to protect corporations and their financial interests.

What makes a piece of infrastructure "critical" is not well defined, and that looseness gives national security units broad discretion to "pre-emptively keep an eye on people," she says.

"That power of discretion is significant because there's always a way to just end up justifying that surveillance," she said.

Canadian YouTuber and CEO of the far-right Tenet Media Lauren Chen appeared before a parliamentary national security committee to discuss the allegations she took money from Russian state media.

Despite having parliamentary privilege extended to her for the appearance in front of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, she refused to respond to questions asked by the committee.

Chen and Tenet Media are at the center of an investigation into Russian nationals Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afansyeva, alleging violations of the US Foreign Agents Registration Act, and conspiracy to launder almost $10 million through payments to Tenet Media.

[...]

Founded by Canadian Chen and Tenet’s president Liam Donovan, Tenet Media is home to some of the largest conservative political commentators on YouTube. Among its roster are big names in digital content including Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, and Benny Johnson.

[...]

Chen developed her brand much like another member of the Tenet roster, Lauren Southern, by creating videos that reinforced popular arguments against left-leaning or progressive politics. Chen often cast her opponents as individuals who hated traditional beauty standards or were hostile toward traditional concepts of femininity. She typically lambasts transgender people for either propagating and/or being victimized by “gender ideology.”

A Toronto police sergeant compromised an investigation when he removed fentanyl that he planned to consume from a storage locker, according to documents released to Ricochet.

Sergeant Mark Kennedy’s alleged decision to remove the drugs without authorization, and steps the Toronto Police Service says he took to conceal his actions, are outlined in documents listing nine counts of professional misconduct under the Police Services Act. He is suspended with pay.

The charges are the latest in a recent series of allegations of illegal drug use, drug possession, and evidence theft against several local cops. Officer misconduct has impacted several criminal cases and raised questions about the integrity of prosecutions and the police service’s handling of dangerous drugs.

The only upside that I can see is that Canadians will have a year to see what a trump style government can do to a country.. Also a trump style government is the same as a poilievre government.

Katarzyna Calow-Jaszewska revealed late last month that four people had been arrested and authorities across Europe were investigating the incidents.

Western security officials have now told US media they believe the fires - which happened in July - were part of an orchestrated campaign by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU.

Russia denies being behind acts of sabotage. But it is suspected to have been behind other attacks on warehouses and railway networks in EU member states this year, including in Sweden and in the Czech Republic.

Ms Calow-Jaszewska said in a statement that a group of foreign intelligence saboteurs had been involved in sending parcels containing hidden explosives and dangerous materials via courier companies. The parcels then spontaneously burst into flames or blew up.

Western officials believe the fires originated in electric massage machines containing a "magnesium-based" substance.

Magnesium-based fires are hard to put out, especially on board a plane.
