From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

long time xubuntu user, now on 24.04.

debian comes with embedded programs like libreoffice, which I use, but versions are very old and I like using the newest versions available. with debian 12.5 I could use flatpak to get the newest version, but could I then get rid of the pre installed old version?

debian's default graphics look also prehistoric. Can I change that installing other styles? (that's what they're called in xubuntu: adwaita, greybird...)

with debian you are asked to choose the environment: xfce, mate... how troublesome is to change those after installation?

Surprising that debian 12.5 is 0.7 GiB large, whereas the xubuntu 24.04 is 4 GiB. This doesn't mean that xubuntu has bloatware, but simply much more pre installed packages, right?

Bonjour tout le monde,

I have finally fully installed linux mint and have been working on getting everything up and running. So far, I haven't had many issues, but I am having trouble with my 2nd drive. I just want my 2nd drive to mount on boot, and for programs to be able to write to it.

I have looked up guides on pulling up the disks in mint and going into the mount options and selecting mount on boot. This works, but for some reason, programs lose permission to write to it. When I switch the drive back to 'user session defaults' programs can write to it, but it doesn't mount on boot. I haven't found anyone mentioning this problem so I thought I would post here. Also, my home folder isn't encrypted and when I go to permissions on the drive, it says 'permissions could not be determined'

Thanks

os: xubuntu 24.04

firewall: ufw

torrent program: transmission

On transmission I opened port 51401

On a terminal I executed sudo ufw allow 51401, which opens both tcp and udp ports for both ipv4 and ipv6. This is called forwarding, right?

I'm following https://github.com/transmission/transmission/blob/main/docs/Port-Forwarding-Guide.md but apparently I still don't get it

ETA: thanks for your input, issue has been solved

I'm a regular user of Linux systems but apart from a couple of test Ubuntu installs many years ago they've always been containers or VMs with no DE which I can throw away when I break them. The Steam Deck showcasing how far Wine/Proton has come combined with Windows being Windows has given me the push; I've made a Mint live USB and it's running beautifully on my desktop. I come to you, the masters, with questions before I hit install:

  1. What do you recommend I do about disk partitions? I'm keeping a Windows install for the few things that demand it, does Windows still occasionally destroy Linux partitions? Do I need separate partitions for data and OS? Is it straightforward to add additional distros as new partitions or is that asking for trouble?
  2. Is disk encryption straightforward? And is that likely to upset the Windows partition?
  3. Is cloud storage sync straightforward? It's my off-site backup solution on Android and Windows (using Cryptomator with Dropbox, Google Drive, etc) but I don't think that many providers have Linux clients. Is something like rclone recommended?
  4. Should I just use apt to install software? I know there's some kind of graphical package manager (synaptic?), does that use apt under the covers or is it separate? Is it recommended to install something like Flathub too?
  5. Any other pearls of wisdom? How do I keep everything tidy? Any warnings about what not to do? Should I use a particular terminal emulator or Firefox fork?

I currently have a low end Windows gaming laptop that I was planning to upgrade to Linux before Win10 goes end of life, but my HDMI port stopped working, so now I'm debating buying a new Linux laptop instead. Can anyone provide any recommendations?

I would prefer to have something preloaded with linux. On my current laptop I don't play anything too demanding because it can't handle it, instead I either stream more demanding games from my desktop or Xbox. I would likely run a VM with Windows because I need to use MS Office for school and I assume I could use that for streaming Xbox games as well.

I would prefer something that can handle a moderate game load without going nuts on fan noise. I would like to have a decent amount of storage (at least 1-2 TB), so either preloaded with that or easily upgradeable would be important.

I'm still figuring out my budget, it depends on what happens with work this summer. I will either be looking for something below $1k or possibly up to $2k if it seems worthwhile. I haven't really used Linux very much before and not at all in the last 10 years. Any ideas?

I understand that nvidia support for wayland is lacking, but I know it's possible.

For context, I was using sway 1.8 for a while (no official support for nvidia). It was working almost perfectly, only minor issues. After the update to 1.9, I get constant flickering.

I can downgrade to 1.8, but the fact that 1.8 was working tells me that it is possible for a window manager to work well for nvidia. The problem is the sway team does not want that headache (understandably so).

Are there any alternatives that work well with nvidia?

VLC is the supreme of all open source projects, you used it in school, college, work and home.

I used it since I was a child and it has never failed on me. It didn't matter what type of file you chucked at it, it would run it.

Do you disagree or agree with VLC being the best media player? What are your thoughts?

I found out that xubuntu spams users including me, which to me is a no go.

I'm looking for a linux based ad free distro that lets me work with libreoffice, vlc, tbb, transmission, okular, pdfarranger, hexchat, gimp and ocr.

I'm going to use it to edit text, watch movies, download multimedia, chat and edit audio with audacity.

it's not going to be a server and I'd like to work with the terminal as much as possible. At the same time, I'm a newbie.

Bspwm has many appeals, and I do not want to focus on those. I want to focus on binary-tree separation of windows and its benefits vs alternatives. What's the appeal?

For comparison, Sway and i3 allow for the v-split and h-split layout, so you can have 2 or more windows split side by side. You can nest them, so it is sort of an n-ary tree. It feels a lot more powerful.

So why the binary tree? The others seem richer and more capable. Bspwm is marketed as more powerful than i3 but it seems the other way around?

this never happened before, it's also not happening ion my backup computer (same OS, xubuntu 24.04).

Message: get more security updates through ubuntu pro with esm-apps enabled, learn more about ubuntu pro

How do I get rid of it.

Ubuntu never advertised itself so blatantly.

To get started with the real-time kernel for Ubuntu 24.04, check out the official documentation. One thing to keep in mind if you’re an NVIDIA GPU user is that the real-time Ubuntu kernel does not support the proprietary NVIDIA graphics drivers.

Hey folks! Hope your day's going good.

I'm hoping someone else has had this problem or knows the application enough to where they can help me. I'm moving my main desktop from W10 to linux (Q4OS, Debian-based) and it's gone well so far.

The only thing I truly need Windows for is work, so I've decided to build a Win11 VM on my Proxmox server and remote into it when I need to do work there. Install went smoothly, and my M365 user is the Admin of the W11 box. Remote Desktop is enabled, and my user is added to the Remote Desktop Users group on the local machine.

I had issues remoting in from anywhere, but after researching I was able to make a shortcut that worked on a Windows machine by adding the below options to the .rdp file. With these added, a web page opens and takes me through M365 authentication, and then I remote in.

username:s:.\AzureAD\name@domain.tld

enablecredsspsupport:i:0

authentication level:i:2

`Note: email address changed for anonymity'

I've tried and failed several different ways to remote into this machine via Remmina. It works as described from Windows machines, but Remmina doesn't seem able to open the webpage that lets me sign in. Instead, I get Remmina's login prompt which I've so far been unable to log in through. This occurs whether I create a profile from scratch or if I import the previously-mentioned RDP file.

I have 2 Windows 10 VMs which are just regular solo machines, and I have no trouble remoting into them, it's just the Azure/Entra joined machine that causes this.

I'd like to use my Azure account on the VM so I can keep work at work, so to speak, and so I don't have to activate Windows (a license is included in my business account). If anyone's got some kind of solution or can tell me how to apply the options above to Remmina, I'd love to know how.

Trying to discover new/unheard Linux desktop programs (Sorry for the confusion).

Edit: I apologise for confusing a lot of people. I meant Linux desktop “programs” coming from Windows/Mac. I'm used to calling them “apps”.

Edit: 🙌 I’m overwhelmed with the great “programs” people have recommended in the comment section. Thank you guys.

commands are:

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT > to open only that tcp port

sudo ufw enable transmission > to open the whole program

being a newbie I'd say it's safer to only open a determined port with iptables. What do you think?
