Very curious how well kbin can work as a Mastodon replacement in addition to a threadiverse reader. Does it work as a one-stop shop for fediverse browsing?

You know what fucks me up? The fact that several different #Fediverse platforms can seemingly talk to each other seamlessly, even the ones that seemingly were not even meant to talk to each other. Stuff on #mastodon is visible here on #kbin. My account from a #Lemmy instance can see my other account on #CalcKey. There's several different "not-Twitter" services each with their own interfaces and instances, and they all chat with each other. I can feel my brain expanding as I learn all of this.

First post on kbin. Sorry if this ends up somewhere it shouldn't. Still figuring things out.

I don't think I'm ready to leave reddit completely, but I don't want to stay there. My compromise has been to bookmark niche subs that still don't have an active equivalent on fediverse or elsewhere. At the very least, I don't have to settle for the insufferable communities on reddit when better communities exist here. So long r/nintendo, r/pokemon.

I find myself doing far less doomscrolling on one site now, and more popping into different places on different sites like I used to pre social media hubs. I might visit my hometowns sub or r/ADHD on reddit, read about current events or gaming news here, and pop into tildes for pleasant conversation. All in all, if there is one positive thing the reddit enshitening has caused, its for the web to feel less centralized and a little more like 2008's internet.

and I can only hope this trend continues.

Dude, Kbin is running so much more smoothly now!

Guess this is going to be my Fedi home, I wasn't certain till the instability was cleared up!

House Oversight Committee ranking member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has shared a transcript from the owner of Burisma that directly refutes the Biden bribery allegations.

Can any #fediverse / #ActivityPub devs take a look at a proposal I submitted to #kbin and #lemmy?

Since the lemmy issue is getting overrun with people talking about other proposals, I'm thinking about submitting this as a #FEP. Is that still a useful process? I don't know how many projects look to FEPs for implementation guidance.

Can someone help me with a few kbin/lemmy questions? I'm trying to understand the difference between the upvote and "boost". Also the differences between Threads, Microblog, and Magazines.

TYIA!

I'm the creator of @Bestof or !BestOf@kbin.social and I've been trying to grow the community for the last couple of weeks. It was an uphill battle as I could only get 5-10 members every day, sometimes even much less.

After finally hitting 100 subscribers yesterday, 200 subscribers this morning, and nearly at 300 subscribers this afternoon, I believe my community is really fruiting!

Thank you so much for your interest. I will do my best to manage this community and have it flourish. I can envision how fantastic it will be, and I hope it contributes to your enjoyment of the Fediverse!

The Fediverse is a massive place with many different software platforms that have different goals but share their support of the ActivityPub protocol.

Twitter Clone

  • mastodon
  • pleroma
  • soapbox

Youtube Clone

  • peertube

Instagram Clone

  • pixelfed

Facebook Clone -Friendica

Blogging Platforms

  • writefreely
  • wordpress

Book sites

  • bookwyrm

Music sites

  • funkwhale

and if you're really stretching the definition then perhaps chat services like matrix (though matrix doesn't use activitypub).

According to one of my favorite sources on the matter, https://the-federation.info/ the fediverse has about 2M active users.

The "threadiverse" consists mostly of the reddit clones. It includes lemmy and kbin, and in more limited extents lotide (It fits the bill but has challenges with federation) and parts of friendica as well as possibly a.gup.pe.

This is just a small taste of all the different projects out there. For a lot of people they might not like one thing but they might like others. Decentralization is strength on the fediverse.

When I look at https://lemmy.ml/c/startrek vs https://kbin.social/m/startrek I see two entirely different lists of posts. Why? It's the same topic, just on different instances. How can we have communities about topics without having them siloed into their own instance-based communities? Is this just related to that 0.18 issue with Lemmy/kbin not talking nicely, or is this how the Fediverse is?

Is it (at least theoretically) possible for me to post an article on https://kbin.social/m/startrek and have it automatically show up on https://lemmy.ml/c/startrek, or are they always going to be two separate communities?

Meta - Progress and Controversy (blog.universeodon.com)

A few months ago, this concept of “p92” started leaking and it was rumored that Meta was joining the fediverse. Initially, not much happened with the discussion. I could run around and say “Nope, I’m not defederating” and no one really cared or challenged that position. I made it clear I advocate for user agency; I’ll teach users how to block Meta if they desire. No one said much to me. Some debates came and went, life went on

I'm getting started with my new band and as a recent reddfugee I was wondering if we could set up our web presence in the Fediverse. Now where would we do this? We'd like to upload songs, share news about concerts and stuff, and post pics from recent events.

Looking for the best place in the fediverse that is dedicated towards images and/ or posting art. Any suggestions?

People in real life do choose to avoid dangerous or toxic places. All that the instances who sign the fedipact are doing is signalling to some of us that somewhere is safe for folk who don't want to engage with Facebook at all.

I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message queue with transport errors.

This doesn't appear to be a mistake; it has been done very deliberately, only on Lemmy.ml. Lemmy.world and other large instances do not exhibit the same behavior. It also isn't a side effect of the bug introduced in Lemmy 0.18. You can observe by sending the following in a terminal

> curl -I --user-agent "kbinBot v0.1" https://lemmy.world/u/test
HTTP/2 200
[...]

> curl -I --user-agent "kbinBot v0.1" https://lemmy.ml/u/test
HTTP/2 403
[...]

> curl -I --user-agent "notKbinBot v0.1" https://lemmy.ml/u/test
HTTP/2 403
[...]

> curl -I --user-agent "placeholder-user-agent" https://lemmy.ml/u/test
HTTP/2 200
[...]

Additional evidence of this not being a Lemmy 0.18 bug:

  • This occurs when making web requests to any location on the Lemmy.ml webserver, not just ActivityPub endpoints.

  • Go to https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy and pick an instance running 0.18.0. Perform the above commands, replacing the URL for Lemmy.ml with that particular instance's address.

If this continues, my instance may need to defederate from Lemmy.ml. This is especially problematic because Lemmy.ml continues to federate information outbound to other kbin instances while refusing to allow inbound communication from them.

Spoofing the user agent is less than ideal, and doesn't respect Lemmy.ml's potential wish to not be contacted by /kbin instances. I don't post this to create division between communities, but I do hope that I can draw awareness to what's going on here. Defederating /kbin instances entirely would even be better than arbitrarily denying access one-way. This said, we should all attempt to maintain a good-faith interpretation until otherwise indicated by the Lemmy developers. It's possibel that this is a firewall misconfiguration or some other webserver-related bug.

Is there a wiki or FAQ that describes the key people and organisations of the Fediverse?
I am interested in learning about them in order to choose the right software and instance.

I'm working on a WordPress plugin for embedding fediverse posts

The plugin is currently under active development, and you can download it and install it manually from here: https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-embeds-wordpress-plugin

Mastodon embeds are working pretty well, but I could use some help with other platforms:

https://github.com/stefanbohacek/fediverse-embeds-wordpress-plugin#supported-platforms

I wrote about the motivation and some of the challenges on my blog: https://stefanbohacek.com/project/wordpress-plugin-for-fediverse-embeds/
