7/23/23 evening update: The Bedrock Fire continues to be active in the Fall Creek area on the Middle Fork District. An updated acreage will be available tomorrow. The fire burned actively today and firefighters from the Oregon Department of Forestry and US Forest Service continued to engage in full suppression efforts and point protection on buildings on private land.

Resources continued to arrive throughout the day and more will be on the scene tomorrow. While there are no evacuation notices in effect at this time, the public is asked to avoid Big Fall Creek Rd. to allow emergency personnel necessary access for suppression.

Several campgrounds along Big Fall Creek Rd. are closed due to fire activity. This includes all campgrounds along Fall Creek Road, and surrounding roads. Smoke may be visible from Highway 58, the towns of Lowell, Jasper, and the McKenzie River corridor.

Hey all,

My water heater just went belly-up and needs a repair. So I'm looking for recommendations. It's a natural gas-powered (sigh...) tankless model, outside, and it won't turn on as of the middle of the night. The control panel, which is electric and inside the house, is completely dead. Don't know if it's an electrical issue, a plumbing issue, a gas line issue, or some combination of all three.

Help!

Me and my gf are visiting from out of state and looking for things to do, and it would be cool to see some live music.

I live pretty nearby, and walk past it regularly. This is the current view from the footbridge over 30th.

Worth noting:

Despite an amendment to the Oregon Constitution designed to prevent it, 10 Republican senators staged a 6-week walkout. They returned on June 15 after Democrats and Republicans reached a compromise. The parties agreed to the ease provisions in HB 2002, the reproductive health care bill, and dropped a proposed constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to same-sex marriage, abortion, and gender-affirming care. Also dropped were more stringent controls on gun possession. As a result, in the remaining 10 days before sine die, several significant bills were passed as modified, including a state budget for the next two years.

Pisses me off that these regressive assholes are still able to manipulate the system enough to prevent progress.

Not judging the ruling itself, just sharing the news.

Lots of interesting events in town and nearby in our marvelous region (many free or low cost).

Hey, just a heads-up, we're not entirely immune to the horrifyingly hot weather afflicting much of the country. Yeah, it's not going to hit 130(!!!) the way it's going to in some parts of the country, but it's still going to be horrid.

Stay indoors if you can, and stay hydrated.

Help make transit better in Lane County!

Lane Transit District is asking for your help in reimagining our transit system for the future. Personally I'm really excited because I've had some ideas for ways in which we could improve transit, and now there's an opportunity to communicate them!

Applications are available online and can be submitted until the 1st of August.

Zooming in on this meeting right now, looks like some of the info is covered at the FDA website. It's still in the bureacratic/testing pipeline towards being declared a Superfund site. Interesting to see how these agencies work and make decisions in our community, in real time. It''s all moving shockingly slowly - apparently partially due to how long it takes for individual sample results to come back from testing (they're still waiting on data from March samples.) But they're currently guesstimating over 601,000 gallons of super toxic chemicals on site: pentachlorophenol, heavy metals, caustic chemicals. Lots of neighbors reporting still significant odors coming off the plant. (Took 40+ years of people complaining and dying of brain cancer before Baxter came onto DEQ's radar and they began fining Baxter for blatantly illegal practices.)

Hi everyone,

I thought I should formally introduce myself and some things I'm working on. I'm kescusay. I'm one of the more active mods for the community on Reddit, but like a lot of you, I've found that the loss of third-party apps has made the Reddit platform painful and annoying to use. (For the record: I did most of my volunteer spam/troll blocking work from RIF on my phone, and I can't anymore.)

Why am I here?

I'm here on Lemmy because the community matters to me more than the platform. I don't care about the specific URL people in Eugene use to share news and resources with each other. I care a lot more about the people. If the platform is no longer conducive to community... well, I have no particular loyalty to Reddit. :)

What's the plan for this community?

Over the next few weeks/months, I'm hoping to implement a number of features that are already present on Reddit:

  • Just like on Reddit, there will be a monthly jobs thread, which I'm hoping people will contribute to in order to help our fellow residents stay employed.
  • I'm going to try to fill out the sidebar with useful resources (consider this a call for people to share what they've got.)
  • Lemmy doesn't have an automoderator (yet), which means that as it grows, there's a greater risk of spam. I'm going to try my hand at writing a Lemmy bot that will filter out spam and help with the kinds of tasks moderators on Reddit rely on the automoderator for.

What about the Reddit community?

I'm staying on there, but massively reducing my involvement, while ramping it up here. One thing I will be doing... I'm going to compose instructions for other Eugene Redditors who would like to become Lemmings. :)

Can I help?

Yes! Please share resources you'd like to see on the sidebar, and please post! We have a neat town that has a lot going on in it, and if you're here, you'd probably prefer to read about it here versus on Reddit.

Anyway, pardon the dust!

Went to see Trek In The Park at Amazon Park in #Eugene tonight. It was really fun and they're was a good turnout.

They're performing "Who Watches The Watchers," the episode where a group of bronze age people decide Picard is a god.

They're playing tomorrow and next weekend.

Hey all,

Over on... er... the Site That Shall Not Be Named, there's a monthly jobs thread. Should we do that here?

I know a lot of you are still probably using Reddit too, so you may have seen this already, but someone accidentally set Pre's Rock on fire last night, probably with fireworks.

I'm going to link the video, even though it's on Reddit, so people can see what happens when someone's a dumbass with fireworks: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eugene/comments/14r3n3i/did_anyone_else_see_the_fire_on_pres_rock_around/
