It's great to see a lot of people subscribing here! I'm Lells, you might know me as Lellela from Reddit, or even oldmansutton from Bay12Games. Welcome all!

I started this magazine because I'm pretty much done rewarding Reddit with content when I don't agree with their behavior and poor choices. So the idea of a decentralized network is a move back in the direction where we the users have more control. For now, this is a platform I believe in. Trust is earned. I'm guessing most of you agree with some of this since you're here.

I'm still learning about it with all of you. I never really wanted to be a moderator. But I love Dwarf Fortress with all my heart, and I know there are others of you out there who share that love, so I wanted us to have a space to be welcome and have a community, and share with each other. To help make both the fediverse AND a community within it a reality, I decided to make this magazine. I can't do this alone, nor do I want to. We're DF players, we are engineers... we are dwarfs and we are digging a hole! What do we want our community to look like? What information do we want to provide? What rules do we want to have? We ARE a community, so let's decide together.

Thanks everybody, and strike the earth!

TL;DR - Diggy diggy hole

Kickin' off a new series, so I thought I'd share it with my fediverse compadres.

I’m also looking for fediverse alternatives for streamers … I’m not really concerned about monetization or anything like that, just looking for alternate places to host my content and someday break the youtube chains.

These are renders of the construction of the main building of Ikûl Tikis, a Ziggurat dedicated to the god of death of this world. The fortress is populated only by vampires after this same god cursed a dwarf in its temple.

In real life, Ziggurat are large temples built by Summerians. Some dubious sources says that they worshiped gods of mountains, and when living away from mountains they would build these temples as literal mountains, which is the most dwarven thing ever.

The 3D export was done with Vox Uristi (my own software) and rendered with MagicaVoxel. If you have any question or suggestion about Vox Uristi or the fortress, please go ahead!

edit: I can't manage to construction timelapse itself - oops, it can be seen on reddit though

Video description:

An edited, illustrated and narrated playthrough of the game Dwarf Fortress

Sharpen your spears and oil your beards because today, my dwarves, we head into the northern swamps in search of monsters!

Watch as a small band of hunters delve the deepest tunnels in search of quarry! Will they prevail? Or will the nearby shrine's guardian put a swift end to their ambitions?

If you didn't know Kruggsmash and like their videos, it's your lucky day. Take a look at the playlists, there are awesome series there.

Lordwall sits at the foot of a giant glacier in a high mountain valley. The small microclimate this location enjoys has proven to be stimulating to all dwarves spirituality. Lordwall has just established an organized religion, devoted to the worship of Rîsen, the Goddess of mountains and caverns. Thikut Blowgirder has assumed the role of Sacred Shadow, Rîsen's earthly prophet. While many of our dwarves worship this deity, not everybody subscribes to Thikut's teachings. Time will tell if Lordwall's inhabitants heed the prophecies being foretold, or if division will threaten our fledgling civilization.

I played DF for many years, but it was a little bit too much FUN until I started using Dwarf Therapist. I forget when this was, but the last time I struck the earth and downloaded a new update, DT had stopped being compatible. (maybe 2018-ish?)

I was bummed because although things were significantly less fun with DT - I had learned to do lots of unfun things like create garbage disposals and training rooms, do interesting shit with magma, discreetly kill human trading delegations (and sell all their stuff), and create a few high level artifacts before the dwarf who was in a weird mood went on a homicidal rampage. Or just murder him in a trap. We managed moody dwarfs on a case by case basis.

The hives were even working.

Fortress life was good. There were no aquifers. Creeping eldritch horrors were mostly confined to the sealed and reinforced cavern levels. Booze was plentiful, songs were being written, thrones were being engraved, rooms were furnished with elaborate beds and chests, and discontent was low.

This was also many eons ago, which leads me to a couple of questions.

  1. Is there a current version of Dwarf Therapist that works with the latest DF version?
  2. Is DT even necessary for the latest version of the game? (I've never used tile sets, so I'm OK with the standard ASCII graphics)
  3. Recommendations about the best FAQ or Wiki?
  4. Should I continue to torture my co-worker by describing it as "sort of like Minecraft, but with a bit of a learning curve?"
