Being subscribed to this community taught me that even if you trust the company you're giving your data to(Don't trust any), it's still only a matter of "when" it will be leaked not "if".

It's just a good rule of thumb that all data you give will end up open/sold.

That's why I started using a catch-all on my domain to register on websites. Each website gets their own email and password combo, and if they get compromised and I get spam, I can just update the email and block the compromised alias.

For others interested in doing this it's possible with Gmail and I presume other providers.

You just use: email.address+dell@gmail.com for example.

Some websites unfortunately don't like the + symbol but I find it's fine for most.

Apple has a hidde my email function built into ICloud

And spammers are probably aware of this and will just strip out the + and everything behind it. Might still be effective to track if your info got leaked tho. If you want to do a real catch-all you need a certain level of technical know-how.

I hate that I always seem to hear about these breaches hours or days before the company gets around to writing to me directly.

I feel like it's only a matter of time until we get a data breach so monumental that it sinks one of the big tech giants.

Like... Something that could sink Google, Microsoft or Meta.

Sink with what lol? They'll keep churning on. And they won't even break a sweat and probably won't upgrade their security.
