I was complaining about my job once and a Redditor told me to just find a better job. Why don't I strap on my job helmet and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into Jobland where jobs grow on jobbies!

suddenly m/IASIP lol

Damn I love that show

Gets even worse when you have mouths to feed. It's not just you striking or quitting, it's them too. But then, it's also them being impacted indirectly by stress, lack of fair wages and lack of safe working conditions. Give your workers what they need and their families benefit too.

[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"Give your workers what they need and their families benefit too."

This implies that they care about what your family or what you need. Every business exists for the sole purpose of extracting money from something, they do EVERYTHING in their power to pay you the LEAST amount possible. All they want are meat machines that can make decisions, press the correct buttons, lift the heavy thing and listen to commands all as cheaply as possible.

It's pretty bad where I work, if you don't fight for a raise you never get one. I have coworkers who have a hard time speaking up (some don't even speak fluent English) and they've never gotten a raise in the 6 years I've known them because they never ask and the boss is more than happy to not have to spend a single dime more.

Being uneducated doesn't help either, I'm considered as valuable as the decayed dog droppings Mr.Dogwalker never picked up. Some might even argue the droppings are actually contributing resources back to the environment which is more valuable than my uneducated ass. But hey, my boss owns a helicopter so that's nice.

Education doesn't necessarily help. Being overeducated is a liability.

[–] Pilkins@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a culture problem. My job has mandatory overtime. They say "if you don't like it, you can find another place to work."

But... every place in my field will say that. So I don't really have an option, do I?

[–] MHcharLEE@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What the hell does mandatory overtime mean. That's just your regular hours then. Is it a way to make your salary look better as it's for the hours you're supposedly working?

[–] DoomsdaySprocket@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 year ago

It’s saying that management is incapable of properly judging their staffing needs versus their production numbers, but doesn’t want to risk having anyone not working at 100% all the time because that would mean they’re not “getting their moneys worth” out of each worker.

Usually it will happen consistently at certain times of the year, in a predictable fashion.

[–] Pilkins@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm hourly so I get paid OT. But as the other commenter said, it's easier and cheaper to pay OT than to get the building properly staffed and risk having downtime. Winter is slower so we work 40. Summer can be anywhere from 40 to 60.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago (6 children)

I dont really feel like these are the only options, though. Why can't you look for another job you'd enjoy more while still working at the job you hate?

[–] Pilkins@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's definitely an option, but not always as easy as it sounds. If you don't have PTO, when do you attend interviews? Every interview I've had has been during normal business hours. And if you need multiple interviews before getting hired?

Will you current employer fire you if they find out you're looking? Or if your prospective employer calls for a reference check and your current employer gives negative comments so they don't lose you?

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Definitely, I don't disagree. Didn't mean to imply that looking elsewhere was an option for everybody.

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.fmhy.ml 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My situation is i won't be able to make nearly the same amount of money within 1000 miles of where I live. Granted, I wouldn't use the word "hate" for my job, but it definitely should be better than it is.

And yes, I could move, but that would mean my wife wouldn't be able to work until she gets licensed where ever we move and my extended family is all here. Don't want to take my kids away from their cousins and grandparents

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Thats a fair point!

[–] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why don't I strap on my job helmet and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into Jobland where jobs grow on jobbies.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Listen bro, I was just asking a question. I don't even have a job right now; I don't need all this smoke!

[–] MostlyBirds@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

You're right, we've definitely never thought of that...

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The meme's message is not incompatible with your suggestion.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Well, the message as I interpreted it is that you either have to:

a) keep working at the job you hate, or b) experience homelessness

What am I missing? Granted, I slept very badly so its entirely possible that I may have morning dumb dumb brain.

[–] Martineski@lemmy.fmhy.ml 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

No no, you have a great point, it's just that there are various circumstances that don't allow many people to do what you described in an easy way.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

True enough!

[–] nocturne213@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, yes you have to do exactly as the meme says, there is no room for a little humor in misery.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca -4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well sarcasm is the lowest form of humor, so forgive me if I dont consider you an expert on what's funny

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And opinions are like kittens; people are always giving them away for free.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago

You know we're literally posting in the comment section of a discussion platform, right? Writing your opinion is kind of the whole point...

[–] dunloap@lemmy.fmhy.ml 0 points 1 year ago

Or work 3 days a week and learn how to live happily on a low income. It's easy outside of major cities

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can't you get another job? Here If I get fired from a job or quit I can go on the job seekers benefit which covers rent food and bills while I look for another job. I assume other countries have something similar.

[–] Martineski@lemmy.fmhy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

New Zealand. Technically if you quit your job you are suppose to be unable to get jobseeker benefit for 13 weeks but if you go to them and say that you cant afford to live they get you to do like 1 day of bullshit courses and then sign you up.

[–] fidodo@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Lol, new Zealand is on the upper side of providing good benefits to workers, not all countries have that or at the same level. You're lucky to live where you do!
