sounds like harkening back to indigenous practices, permaculture, and Miyawaki method – variety of native species that already grew together perform better than monoculture …

I think they're more getting at how the differences in plant community dynamics can influence ecosystem recovery and resource management. It's unsurprising that lodgepole didn't do as well with a shitpile of alder growing there. However, it is interesting that a little bit didn't hurt it, and that at higher amounts of alder, alder itself did worse.
