Do you have auto media preview on? That might be why it's grabbing that playlist.

[–] Ohwatafool@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes I do! I’ll try disabling that and see what happens when I’m back at the office tomorrow

[–] dragfyre@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

kbinning at the office, eh?

What else am I supposed to do? Work? Talk to people in person? Gross

Do you have some sort of playlist/media downloading add-on enabled on Firefox? Because that is what the extension listed is for.

I'm using Firefox as well and don't get that, the next thing I would look at is a possible malware infection.

Edit: changed extension to add-on. I've got chrome on the brain at the moment.

.m3u8 is a file format for video streams. It works like a playlist, it's a file that defines a collection of individual video files, each being one small part of the stream.

m3u8's can't be played natively by a browser, and if the OP has enabled autoplay media, kbin is probably directing the browser to that URL, the browser can't play it in-tab, so it downloads it as a file instead.

Quirky little bug you found there OP. Codeberg would love to know.

There's another post about this that has a codeberg issue placed.

https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/446

Neat, I’ve made much ado about nothing lol. Still not sure what a codeberg is, suppose I should look at that too.

Since nobody has filled you in, I may as well : Codeberg appears to be FOSS Github. It's just a place for people to track bugs and collaborate on open source projects which is presumably, itself, open source.

Codeberg is a non-profit founded specifically to provide a FOSS alternative to GitHub and GitLab for hosting projects. The site is based on Forgejo, which is a community-driven fork of Gitea (both are FOSS, though Gitea is helmed by a for-profit company).

[–] Ohwatafool@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sorry, how does one go about letting Codeberg know?

[–] HarkMahlberg@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah, well it seems they already know lol

[–] Ohwatafool@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Heck, someone else doing the dirty work is just my style

[–] Ohwatafool@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I don't believe so. The only extensions I have are bitwarden, multi-containers, uBlock, and Dark reader. It actually has stopped now after I logged out of Kbin and then back in. I suppose I'll associate it with some sort of user error, because I don't see the problem being posted aside from me. Thanks for the suggestions

Actually, it just did it again as I was scrolling through All...anytime this post about the debris field near the titanic loads, it downloads the file. I'll search through my firefox settings and see what I can see.

[–] XxTriviumxX@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

youre not alone... only happens when kbin loads that specific media

[–] shatteredsteel@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That is very strange, does explain why I'm not seeing this issue though. I have most of the us/generic news magazines blocked.

I'm not a kbin developer or web developer, but this issue has my curiosity piqued.

Do you get it when you go to the CBS news site for the story itself? Maybe it's something to do with the instance itself or a bug in the link?

[–] Ohwatafool@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I haven’t tried going directly to the site, you’re right it may have something to do with the CBS link trying to load the preview on Kbin. Seeing as it doesn’t actually display anything that’s a good hunch. Unfortunately I’m going to be away from the computer until tomorrow, and I’m not having an issue with it on mobile. I’ll save that post and try then.

I know you said you’re not a developer, but do you know how to get notifications for these replies? I have them checked in settings, but they don’t seem to be functioning. I just keep coming back to this post to see if there are any other comments.

Getting the same exact thing, including in the above thread.

[–] banjoman05@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm getting the same thing, also Firefox 114.0.1 (64-bit) Windows 11.

Edit: just let Firefox update to 114.0.2 (64-bit) and same thing.

[–] Ohwatafool@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

It's in a Firefox browser btw. Not sure if that makes any difference.
