Fun fact, you'll pass out once you've passed your limit without oxygen as an auto response in order to breathe. So holding your breath is a no go

Under normal conditions, your body will make you start breathing before your oxygen levels go that low.

Also if you can overcome the urge, you'll successfully hold it a lot longer than you think you could without passing out. Especially if under water. The record is 24 minutes and 37 seconds.

Though to go that long you have to minimise the amount of energy your body is using even down to your thoughts so your brain uses less.

There's a recent Veritasium video on it. The water helps because of the Mammalian Dive Reflex. The guy he's doing the video with says basically getting over that first instinct to breathe is the worst and then after that your body makes more adjustments and quits complaining as much.

Then it starts feeling good and that's when you worry.

Nahhh just make sure to have an abundance of sharp corners around when you pass out, first.

You might wake up brain damaged and with a splitting headache instead, but worth a shot.

Heh, every time someone gets the hiccups, I suggest they just hold their breath for ten minutes

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The most reliable way of getting rid of hiccups is suicide.

Well most suicide attempts fail...

Most people don't actually want to die, they just don't want to hurt anymore.
