Rules:

1) Treat Others in a Civil Manner. This is not the place to deride others for their race, sexuality, or etc. Personal insults of other members are not welcome here. Neither are calls for violence.

2) No Contemporary Politics Historical politics that influenced designs or adoption of designs are excluded from this rule. Acknowledgement of existing laws to explain designs is also permissable, so long as comments aren't in made to advocate or oppose a policy. Let's not make this a place where we battle over which color ties our politicians should have, or the issues of today.

3) No Advertising This rule doesn't apply to posting historical advertisements or showing more contemporary ads as a means of displaying information on an appropriate topic. The aim of this rule is to combat spam/irrelevant advertising campaigns.

4) Keep Post on Topic This rule will be enforced with leeway. Just keep it related to arms or Forgotten Weapons or closely adjacent content. If you feel you have something that's worth posting here that isn't about either of those (and doesn't violate other rules) feel free to reach out to a mod.

5) No NSFW Content Please refrain from posting uncensored extreme gore or sexualized content. If censored these posts may be fine.

Post Guide Lines

These are suggestions not rules.

-Provide a duration for videos. eg. [12:34]

-Provide a year to either indicate when a specific design was produced, patented, or released. If you have an older design being used in a recent conflict provide the year the picture was taken. Dates should be included to help contextualize, not necessarily give exact periods.

-Post a full URL, on mobile devices it can be hard to tell what you're clicking on if you only see "(Link)".

-Posts do not have to be just firearms. Blades, bows, etc. are also welcome.

MODERATORS

Fairly simple question. So far I'm the only one posting, others are welcome if not encouraged to do so too. But I've been trying to cover a variety of materials to see what people like.

Is there any time period, type of design, kind of post, etc that you want to see here?

Leave a comment here and I'll try and find at least one post's worth of whats interesting to you.

Want stuff from a given conflict? Want to learn more about the guns of a specific country? Do you want to see more unique mechanisms? Love big bore cartridges? Let me know!

Siege weaponry isn't usually my area of expertise, but I think I should be able to find something good for that. You should see something here in the next day or two.

Stick to what the name of the community says. Rare, prototype, one-off, mythical and everything else of the like all apply. There's plenty of potential content. Just don't post too often and run yourself out of material.

Thanks, I've been trying to put out a lot of stuff to get the community to grow fast because I know I can't keep it alive by myself forever. And we've almost hit 300 members, which I mostly attribute to being found in All thanks to those posts. But it's probably a good idea to come down from posting ten plus times a day.

You did the legwork getting things rolling. I'm sure there will be other people posting —myself included—now that there's a good crowd.

I like the ones with unique mechanisms, e. g. the one with the cat which shoots around corners.

Are there mentionable weapons from famous people? Had Elvis a golden pistol?

Thank you for keeping this community alive.

There's no shortage of failed designs with unique mechanisms.

And I can definitely find you some some mentionable things from famous people.

If you're interested in some of the more personal stories I've got one about the 1st US President Washington, and how he almost got killed that'll post soon.

I'd also recommend you watch this video on an incredible story of a WW1 soldier who had an odds defining journey with his rifle that he was punished for carving. I posted about it a few days ago and it didn't get much traction here, but I think the story is incredibe.

I thought this community was just about firearms, would medieval weapons work too?

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

The way I see it this is a community about the coalescance of history and design not just guns.

Medieval content is welcome. There may be focus on firearms but any kind of arm or martial instrument is certainly welcome here.
