Side question: how easy is to make an "honeypot" matrix server that can read and log all the chats in a nice report for LEOs?

Pretty sure it stands for a law enforcement officer or something similar

[–] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago

Anyone can setup a honeypot with the right knowledge and resources. The kicker is to go about it in such a way to attract users and not tip anyone off of ill intent.

[–] matcha_addict@lemy.lol 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Couldn't you do that by just joining an existing server?

[–] Moonrise2473@feddit.it 2 points 2 months ago

Private conversations I mean

Theres one. But it's unmoderated and the only time I visited it there was a an account (or honeypot) advertising telegram channels with explicit CSAM related titles.

Made me physically retch looking at it and I left. Plus there's like only 150+ users or something like that

What is this channel is about?

I don't want to click this without knowing what is this about.

Context clues would suggest it has something to do with piracy. One way to find out...

[–] AsudoxDev@programming.dev 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You know, you won't be hacked or get a virus or something like that the moment you click it.

[–] KomfortablesKissen@discuss.tchncs.de -2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

But your username and server will be seen and could potentially be noticed by someone you don't want.

[–] AsudoxDev@programming.dev 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

???

Clicking the link won't automatically join the server. Matrix.to will see your IP address.

Yeah, was thinking about joining the room to see what is written. Not what was asked.
