German producers have sparked a dispute by filing an opposition to a Turkish application to grant the döner kebab's special status at the EU level, initiating a six-month period to resolve disagreements.

A Turkish application to the European Commission for the döner kebab to be given similar EU recognition as the Neapolitan pizza and Spain's jamon serrano has been opposed by Germany, sources close to the issue have told Euronews.

As reported, in April Türkiye filed an application to register the name döner in Europe so that it can be used only by those producers conforming to the registered production method and product specifications.

It's interesting to me that Turkey wants to restrict döner. The examples are specific like Neapolitan pizza not pizza and jamon serrano not jamon or serrano.

Personally I'm against it as it seems excessively broad. If they force it through I hope local businesses just use donner or donere or something.

The germans must be stopped. They are going too far with their bullshit "Döner is german" insanity. the entire heritage of the döner is turkish, from its roots in Bursa in modern day Turkey. Even if you want to be kind to other places in the former ottoman empire, the vertical kebab roasting is from Turkey for god's sake.

The next step is going to be to say that Frankfurters are obviously a product of turkish origin, since you know, we have Sausages

fucking GDK, it's not like the Döner was invented in Hamburg by Hans Döner, of german heritage. The closest thing they get is Kadir Nurman , selling it as a sandwich, which already has existed in turkey as "Ekmekarası döner" (döner in between bread)

The mental acrobatics to frame this as some German effort to claim cultural heritage over the dish... The main pushback on this did not come from the German ministry, but from the fast food restaurants, which are almost exclusively operated by people with Turkish roots. I would actually appreciate a return to the meat made from higher quality beef slices instead of the modern ground meat abominations, but your comment is just an insanely biased take on the proposal. Also, "Frankfurter Würstchen" is only protected by origin inside of Germany, not at the EU-level and Sausage has been around since ancienct times. This kind of arbitrary bullshit about origins, cultural heritage and drawing meaningless lines in the sand is exactly what the EU PDO is often criticized for.

The problem is that the Döner as sold in Germany is different from the one sold in Turkey. So most Döner sold in Germany would no longer be allowed to be sold as Döner, if this passes. The main one is that Turkey wants to ban beef from being used in Döner, but also turkey(as in the animal). Also a bunch of salad options and dressings, which are rather common in Germany would no longer be allowed.

So the German Döner industry, which is mostly run by Turks, wants to make sure this does not pass and lobbied the German government to step in.
