I am trying to follow this community on another lemmy instance, but I can't get it to turn up in search results on lemmy.ml.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there an issue with federating with it for some reason?

That's odd, I have the same issue on my instance. Maybe the target instance does not federate with lemmy.ml?

Should searching for a community from that instance trigger federation automatically though? Unless one instance has blocked the other (which seems unlikely, given the other instance is effectively a single person instance)

That's what I meant, that the target instance did not enable federation. It could be a misconfiguration, or something else entirely, I did not check my logs to see what had happened exactly.
