Lemmy.world users: Notice who posted this?

Yes, its a https://beehaw.org user, posting to !memes@lemmy.ml.

Despite the defederation, we still get beehaw.org users posts and comments. We just got to go through 3rd party services now (such as lemmy.ml) to talk or interact with beehaw.org users.

We're cutoff, but not really. I think this post deserves a "Best of" since its one of the clearest examples of how Defederation works in practice. Its not as bad as #RedditBlackout users seem to think it is.

I could be very much mistaken, but aren't we interacting with a ghost version of the Beehaw community and posts? As in, we might indeed see the content, but what we write never ends up showing up on their instance

Yes. But this is being hosted on the lemmy.ml server, which Beehaw.org remains federated with. And lemmy.world remains federated with lemmy.ml.

This means that lemmy.ml serves as our middle-man in this particular discussion. As long as we're on neutral grounds, we can talk and interact with Beehaw.org users. We're not as fully cut off as #RedditBlackout users think!

actually beehaw users can't see your comments/replies. only you can see theirs.
