It's perfectly normal unicode. It is merely not English. English isn't the only language, and international domain names and TLDs have existed for over two decades now.

Good point. Such a shame that I cannot find those characters on my keyboard, though.

Luckily all internationalized TLDs are translated to punycode so you can type them with ASCII characters

You can switch to a japanese layout, or use a compose key. Or just copy paste. :)
Well, it's a good way to keep out the less determined traffic.
