The last couple of years we’ve been having fun with some comic experiments during the Summer holiday. Last year, we introduced Lion & Gazelle, who even stuck around because we enjoy the format and how it divers from our normal comics. We also had some fun with euro game covers and before that, we had… Continue reading

FAQ

I live in Nicaragua/Canada/Bahamas/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!

Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.

Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?

Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.

Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?

Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).

Can I donate all my money to you?

No

Can you help me promote my game?

Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.

Your list is full of errors and now I got an ID-10t message!

Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on second-tier magic, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

And with what player count?

I've been showing a few of my friends the Star Wars Deck Building Game and Star Realms quite a bit. Loving them. Most of the time I'm only playing two player games. Another that I replay a lot is Hive.

There's games I like more, but that I don't seem to get to play very often. Maybe I need to be proactive about setting up game nights!

So, honestly not sure if something like this exists.

Going on vacation and looking for an entry-level RPG like game that I can play together with my wife while camping.

It could be pen and paper based or an actual board game. But it needs to be a guided story which requires little preparation. Also open for other suggestions for 2p other than the typical classic/card games.

Thanks everyone!

EDIT: Thanks y'all for your recommendations, I will check everything out! Lot of promising options here!

This is such a weird situation. Overall it's nothing bad, as they say they're still well ahead of the original promised release date, but at the same time they had already said in a past update how the EU copies "are already with [the fulfillment company]".

I can only imagine they themselves didn't get an explicit update either and due to lacking EU paperwork their copies got binned so they now have to expedited-ship a bunch of new copies over.

In any case, NI soon. Ish. Soon-ish!

My local board game shop sells Nemesis lockdown and I'm trying to decide if I should buy it or not. The game looks awesome, however, it's a little pricey.

Heard some people state that lockdown was a little harder to learn, and then they'd recommend newer players learn the original prior to getting the lockdown version.

I did have a few other questions about it though. Do the expansions work with lockdown? Is there any additional player expansions that you can add on to it? We have a gaming group regularly with 5 to 7 people, it'd be really nice if we could fit those additional two people on.

Hi folks! Currently on vacation with my family and we're getting tired of the party games I own. Looking for a couple of suggestions! Some caveats:

  • No word based games, we already have and love Just One, Codenames, etc
  • No social deduction games, they hate them
  • Preferably language independent or with few text dependence. We have Portuguese and german people in the group and not everyone understands English!
  • Low weight/rules
  • Supports 7 players!

Thanks a lot friends!

Hey everyone.

I got the steam game on a sale some time ago. Now my wife is playing it a lot more than me through family share. Her birthday is coming up and I'm thinking about getting the game for her as it also won Spiel des Jahres this year.

Have any of you played the game? I'd be happy to hear any experiences you want to share.

Broke out Gate and the Gates expansion for this morning’s solo game session. Got close to winning this time around, but the deck was under built by the time I got to the final two enemies. Final score of 30!

In recent years the trend to adapt video games into boardgames is just increasing.

Games like Stardew Valley, Civ, This war of mine and many more coming like Terraria or Call of Duty.

Some of these games like Civ are extremely complex games and I always wondered how well these translate into a boardgame. The production value of these games is often high, but I have my reservation that Stardew Valley the boardgame really captures the same "magic" as the video game did.

What are your thoughts on them? Any really good ones out there worthy checking out (lets exclude Dorfromantik here)?

223

I'm tinkering with a framework to implement board games in c# (similar to boardgame.io in JS) part of that is getting a handle on turn structures. (What is a round? what is a turn? who gets to go when? etc)

So I've gone through all my games and looked for recurring patterns and exceptions to them and here's what I've collected so far:

  • There's always at least one structure that handles how player act or "take turns"
    • the vast majority of games do traditional turns - one player does things, then then another,
      • usually in a fixed order maybe going forward some times and backward other times.
      • sometimes the order can change
      • also possible are:
        • turn order decks (you don't know who goes next but know that everyone gets a turn)
        • action tracks (where whoever is furthest back gets to go next, possibly resulting in an uneven number of turns)
        • the next player is dependent on an action of the previous player
    • it's also possible that players can play simultaneously
      • a complete free for all is pretty common
      • it's also possible that players can act freely to some point, then have to wait for everyone else to catch up
    • another consideration, both for concurrent and sequential play is that sometimes some players are excluded (Codenames for example lets all guessers on a given team act concurrently but not the leaders or the other team)
    • there can be different rules at different times (like first picking a tile in sequence then everyone can place it simultaneously)
    • and there can be nested rules (like every player gets to run an auction but in every auction each player get's to bid as well)
    • one relatively common special case is where certain actions on a player's turn result in decisions being needed from other players (trades, attacks, "each player ..." effects)
  • there are often structures that simply subdivide another structure
    • they can occur at any level. A game may be divided into "setup" and "play", a round could be divided into different phases but a single player's turn might also be divided into smaller steps.
    • these subdivision usually restrict / specify which actions are allowed in them
    • these subdivision often come with limits like: you can only do N actions
    • sometimes a player can "pass" sometimes they cannot

I'm wondering if anyone can think of an instance that is not covered by these "rules".
