What the title says. Every year I hear everyone at work go buzzing about Prime Day, and then when I'd go check what items were on sale they were mostly cheap gaff and a bunch of minimally discounted tech products. Am I missing something that's optimal to get around this time of year?

Some shady webside asked my credit card numbers "for verification purpose". Yeah, sure !

I received the confirmation email and when I ran the link, it just opens up the registration page of kbin.social. When I tried logging in, it said that the account is not active. Are new registrations closed?

I need to either replace my office chair or replace it's wheels - they're killing my wood floors when the chair moves off the mat.
Amazon is now an abyss of sponsored listings and fake reviews and algorithms - so I'm unable to get good feedback on a solution.
I've heard that the skateboard style replacements are good - but too rolly, leading to unwanted movement.
Any suggestions on replacements that have worked for you?

I bring this up because it seems to once again be gaining traction in the zeitgeist: I cannot comprehend why UFO hunters put so much time and effort into trying to force governments to "reveal the truth about extraterrestrial contact", but I also cannot fathom how they think aliens even have a chance of successfully contacting us in-person in the first place.

a) Why does anyone believe extraterrestrials would be able to track us down at all? Space is BIG.
b) If aliens knew we existed in the first place, please explain the math of how they'd get here. Even taking Star Trek logic into account and considering warp drive as a possibility, when considering relativity, Newton's third law and the mathematics of achieving the right conditions of either for deep space travel, warp drive still seems implausible.
c) In the mathematically improbable situation where intelligent life did manage to get here, why would they be tiptoeing around in the background for seemingly 80 or so years when they are clearly technologically superior to us and nothing humanity has available to itself could remotely stop them? It seems silly to imagine these incredible lifeforms getting here and then having an "oops we crash landed" event.
d) Lastly, governments successfully covering up such an event(s) for decades is a fairy tale. Governments playing around with flight and stealth technology for the last 100 years? Yeah that seems likely.

Do I think intelligent life exists? Absolutely. Is there a chance those beings have contacted or reached us? 99.9999999% no. Is it fun to speculate about the possibilities and portray those possibilities in stories? Of course. Should people be spending time and money forming organizations to "force the government to tell the truth", thereby wasting everyone else's time and resources and ultimately being drains on society? Absolutely not. I don't get it.

(trigger warning: sensitive topics. if you cannot handle it, please do not read)

for me, the worst thing I have ever seen was that video of that girl accidentally shooting her cousin on instagram (?) live, killing him instantly, then panicking and shooting herself. it randomly popped into my head today and i felt lots of dread. it was extremely tragic.

i have seen a handful of gore videos, and i hate gore, but no gore i have ever seen felt more tragic than what happened to those two kids.

edit: do not link gore videos.

I'd just like to sort by Newest when going back to the Homepage or when opening the site... is there a script for this..? I am using kbin enhancement script, Kbin Usability Pack, and Kbin Subscriptions panel currently.

This isn't some achievement but I'd say my action was to move out of Lithuania. I was bedridden due to pollen, so sensitive that I spent the summers on a ventilator because of it. Me and my parents moved out to Norway, and the pollen allergies subsided.

And what does it do? My air compressor cannot get above 60 PSI, it should get to 120 psi. I noticed this piece is where I am losing pressure. Can I replace it?

pretty much the title

See title. I can't find what instances are federated or defederated with kbin.social.

The posts in Kbin don't seem to move much the last few days I've been using it, but if I go somewhere like lemmy.world the content is always pretty fresh

Is KBin just slow or is there something fundamental I don't understand about federation? (Likely)

I'm still not entirely sure how all this magic works but would I be correct to assume it's only thread data that's transfered across the fediverse? And because Kbin is Kbin, it shouldn't have the exploit the Lemmy software has right?

Appologies if this seems stupid - it's a genuine question

Yesterday i had a pain in the foot for no reason, walking was highly suffering, then the pain disappeared suddenly and i never understood where it came from.

Sometimes, the rules you have to respect for your job may have ethical problems. Did you violated one of these rules ?

With SEO ruining search engines I thought this would be an interesting question.

I wanted to see this meme captioned, but I wasn't sure how to make the joke myself.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Original post: I want to create a niche community, but considering Lemmy can't see kbin magazines, wouldn't it make more sense to make the community on Lemmy, that way people from both Lemmy and kbin can be a part if it?

Maybe I should have posted this on a nostupidquestions community, I don't know.

I'm American and in addition to our messed up healthcare system. Teeth are simultaneously so important that I have to see a specialist (dentist) for routine care, but so unimportant that it's not included in my healthcare coverage. Is it like that elsewhere?

Must not be primarily character driven like Mad Men and The Wire, and must not have supernatural elements as in Twin Peaks. I really like Mindhunter. Looking for similar recommendations if possible. Thanks

For me, they are members of a forum i joined long time ago. After the forum died, we moved to discord. They are really wholesome and respectful, and they know some things about me that even my mom ignore.

Robert Downey Jr is the obvious case of a person who had a redemption arc, to simplify it he was a promising actor that got addicted to drugs, fell off, went to rehab and then became a huge hollywood big stsr known, even known for being Iron Man.

What real life person had a redemption arc?

I read an interesting point which I hadn't realized before. Discussions on current social media are always current, not long term. You open the app or website to see what's going on now. When you comment, it's soon lost to history, buried by newer stuff. If you happen on a post more than a day or two old, it doesn't make sense to comment as it's already passed and nobody will read your reply. You're not building anything of long term value. It was not like this in forums that predated social media. You could reply to a years old thread, and it would be bumped to the head of the queue. I suppose both the form of social media with its feeds and the algorithms designed to hook you and make you come for more are to blame.

How could we make kbin or fediverse in general more purposeful long term and less for instant gratification? Going back to old forum form is probably not the answer, but maybe something between feeds and forums or even something entirely new? With fediverse we have the opportunity to build something better and more useful than what we have now, as we are not bound by the economic imperative to make the users hooked.

Personally I believe that it'll make people associate the Fediverse with Threads, which is not a good thing. Edit: It'll replace their definition of the Fediverse, with Threads, and people may widely forget about Mastodon, Lemmy, Kbin etc.
