Some thoughts about using the Microblog functionality in kbin and why, controversially, I think it might actually beat Mastodon at it's own game - browsing toots.

Kbin let's you have a curated feed of posts from the fediverse (including Mastodon toots) which is sorted by new, hot, top etc.

Steps:

  1. First, if you are subscribed to the https://kbin.social/m/Random magazine, I'd suggest you unsubscribe - kbin drops everything which it can't allocate to a magazine into here, which for the Microblog stuff is a lot of noise.

  2. Do make sure you've subscribed to a few magazines, but also you can subscribe to domains like https://kbin.social/d/social.bbc

  3. Follow people (I'm not sure of they will show up, but can't harm)

...now look at "Subscribed", and then choose the Microblog section (on desktop it's a tab at the top, on mobile you'll need to scroll to the bottom of Page 1 to find the Microblog button).

You should find this Microblog has stuff linked to the magazines you subscribe to, this is due to hastags being linked to those magazines, and also included posts from domains you've subscribed too. I'm not actually sure if people you've followed show up here(?)

Better still you can now sort and filter this list, New, Hot, Top / 3h, 6h, 12h, day, week etc.
This is sorting based on boots and upvotes.

In summary you've now got a custom curated feed of fediverse posts, and you can sort this feed by the posts which are most popular.

...I don't think Mastodon let's you sort your feed like this - this is power!

Edit: Fixed the hyperlink to Random

I've seen a few posts lately in my feed coming from this community with links to pictures of underaged girls marked NSFW.

The latest was from user nic666@kbin.social

This might be worth investigating. We wouldn't want this place to be infested with bots posting pedo crap everywhere.

A small group of people were offended by a joke that unintentionally came across transphobic, and as a result this persons account was blacklisted. Even after getting the account reinstated, there were lasting complications with the state of the account (these probably technical issues) and the account was basically lost for good.

The 9th paragraph is where the incident is discussed.
What do yall think of this?

I've definitely been misunderstood myself, and it kinda sucks to think that my account could be lost for good due to a few reports, hasty banning, and some bug in the software.

My purpose in gathering this informal, conversational feedback is to bring voices into the “how should Mastodon be” conversation that don’t otherwise get much attention—which I do because I hope it will help designers and developers and community leaders who genuinely want Mastodon to work for more kinds of people refine their understanding of the problem space.

I feel like the reason #Mastodon, and the #Fediverse at large, aren't taking off has to do with the fact that they're actually social networks. People don't seem to want a social network, they want content platforms. People aren't using #Twitter or #Threads or #TikTok to keep up with their friends these days, they're using these apps to entertain themselves. And since #Facebook and every other platform that used to be a social network began pivoting toward content promotion, I think society has forgotten what a social network is supposed to actually be anymore.

Links:

  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Edge - v1.2.3 is still being approved, you can grab the release from Github if you are eager
  • Opera: Still under review, please download from Chrome webstore or Github release.

For questions / support: https://lemmy.ca/c/instance_assistant (alternate: lemmy.ca/c/instance_assistant)

What’s new?

(read on the wiki)

  • You can now customize the instance list to match which instances you actually use. This should be helpful for those that have accounts on different instances.
  • Added a settings page so that you can turn off features that you don’t want active
  • Added buttons for helpful tools that let you explore Lemmy/Kbin communities (with lemmyverse.net), and search across Lemmy sites (with search-lemmy.com).
  • Added a sidebar for those that prefer it (works on Firefox, Chrome & Opera; Edge doesn’t have sidebars yet but the code is there)
  • Fix for issues with the search trigger on the community not found page (thank-you to whqwert!)
  • Various bugfixes, small theme changes, and improved wording

What’s coming up?

(read on the wiki)

  • Working with the amazing /u/howdy@thesimplecorner.org to bring over features from the LemmyTools Userscript^1^
  • Integrating lemmyverse.net and search-lemmy.com so you can do everything right on your community page^2^
  • Adding icons and simplifying the design, as the UI is getting wordy
  • Adding support for alternative home instances (ex. Alexandrite - Issue 14)
  • Ability to have multiple ‘home instances’, so you can open it in any without having to change your home instance each time.
  • Finishing the setup so that people can contribute translations / other languages to the extension.
  • Getting the extension on Opera (no immediate plans, but this would be good to have)

More details:

  1. /u/howdy@thesimplecorner.org has created a really useful userscript that you can find here: https://kbin.social/search?q=lemmytools@thesimplecorner.org (alternate: thesimplecorner.org/c/lemmytools). We’re going to be working together to bring those features into Instance Assistant, so that you can have all the features in one place.
  2. Right now there are buttons to explore Lemmy/Kbin communities (with lemmyverse.net), and search across Lemmy sites (with search-lemmy.com). Both of these take you to the respective webpages. Instead, it might be nicer to have a lightweight version right on the Lemmy/Kbin community page (or in the extension popup/sidebar). This should be possible using their APIs/data access, and I have a little working proof of concept already (see GitHub)

I’m new, what is this?

Instance Assistant is a browser extension that started out as a way to quickly jump from one community to the version on your home instance, so that you could subscribe/participate immediately. Since then, a few other features have been implemented:

Features

  • Redirect to your home instance:

    • Buttons will be added to the sidebar of any Lemmy or Kbin community you visit, which will let you open the same community on your home instance.
  • Open links in home instance:

    • Right click context menu will allow you to open any links in your home instance
  • Improved Error Pages:

    • ‘Community not found’ pages now have better information, a button to trigger a fetch, a button to open a community in the source instance, and more.
  • Customizable popup & sidebar menus:

    • Customizable list of instances to let you quickly switch home instances. This is great for if you have multiple accounts on different instances.
    • There are also buttons for helpful tools that let you search for communities (with lemmyverse.net), and search across Lemmy sites (with search-lemmy.com).
  • Settings:

    • You can change the default behaviour of the extension, customize the popup & sidebar menus, and turn off features you don’t want to use.

cross-posted from: https://beehaw.org/post/6853479

mastodon.art has decided to suspend firefish.social from their instance due to issues with its administrator. The administrator of firefish.social was found to be boosting posts from a known harasser on another instance. mastodon.art takes a firm stance against racism and suspending full instances in these situations is part of their policy as a safe space. The known harasser has a history of using slurs, harassment, and editing screenshots to spread misinformation. However, the administrator of firefish.social has now forged a screenshot to paint mastodon.art in a negative light.

As email is the original federated system, it might be worth looking to our history to see our future: what was once a utopia for nice people communicating with each other has become a spam-filled arms race dominated by only a few domains.

Email originally wasn't built with safety and protection in mind, and now we're racing to catch up - maybe we can do better on the Fediverse, but it'll take more than just kbin (or even kbin and Lemmy) - this would require coordination between everyone implementing ActivityPub.

(This is also a fun video in general which goes into the inner workings of email.)

Not just @x: Elon Musk also took @xAI from its original user for his AI company: A pattern is emerging. Hopefully, this won't happen in the #fediverse.

Hello Everyone!

I am looking for feedback on my newest project - an entirely automated Top Headlines Newsletter, powered by GPT-4. Top news that is picked and written entirely by AI is delivered to your inbox every morning at 9 AM PST.

Our system is fully automated, taking care of everything from selecting topics to sending the newsletter. This means that if I went on vacation, you would still receive a newsletter every morning.

Our newsletter is integrated with our site, and all stories use 2 left, 2 center, and 2 right wing sources (characterized by AllSidesMedia).

I truly think that AI can revolutionize how we consume news, from mitigating polarization, stopping misinformation spread, and minimizing bias. Please let me know your opinions below!
