Ah, a while ago when I checked hexbear wasn't blocked yet. Well the Chinese probably don't like seeing shit on pig-balls everywhere 🫠

Yeah, this was a nice fnord when it was first discovered.

But given that the other two are not blocked it is probably for some mundane reason like that early on lemmy.ml was targeted with a lot of nazi spam.

No bridges are not end 2 end encrypted. The best you can do is host the server and bridge in your own home and thus have the bridge "end" in a secure location.

If your friends and family are not very technical, then Matrix is probably a bad idea as it tends to be quite in your face about all sorts of technical issues especially with the encryption keys and so on. It works ok usually once everything is set up though.

XMPP is IMHO the better option as the mobile apps are easier to understand and the e2ee usually works out of the box and stays out of the way unless you specifically want to mess around with it. For a friends & family server I recommend setting up https://snikket.org/ or rent a server from them cheaply.

There are also good bridges for XMPP, but setting them up requires more understanding of self-hosting.

This, although you should probably mention that the full version is gratis on F-droid.

The tide lifts all the boats... there is also a noticeable uptick in Lemmy registrations, at least here on our instance.

Well, you are not going on a hiking trip 😅 Although good shoes are probably still not a bad idea.

I don't have a go-bag right now per se, but I have a few items I would probably be able to pack quickly.

A fully charged USB power-bank for example and some basic first aid bag.

This is a good overview.

Basically the US imports a 100 billion € per year more than it exports in goods to the EU. And the EU mostly just imports oil and gas (and some pharmacyticals) from the US, which are relatively easy to substitute, while the reverse is mostly high-tech equipment hard to substitute.

However, despite this appearing like the US needs the EU more then the reverse, these tariffs can still bite as economically speaking the EU of course wants to export more than it imports as this is a wealth transfer from the US to the EU and tariffs make that harder.

Na und jetzt bitte noch mit dem AfD Mitgliedsregister abgleichen... bzw. deren Mitarbeiter weil das echt nach nem Vollzeitjob klingt.

XMPP basically uses the same end to end encyption method as Signal, but due to it not being mandatory some things are easier but come with the footgun that you can accidentially disable it (but it is enabled by default in most modern xmpp clients).

Otherwise: since XMPP federates more servers can theoretically see some metadata, but since most servers are small and community run there isn't a single big target like with Signal where you can siphon off all the metadata. So you can make arguments for both. XMPP: more meta data but decentralized, Signal: less metadata but all in one place.

Security researchers always look at a specific thing, usually the encryption only. The message encryption of Signal is great, the problem is all the rest of it that never gets scrutinized that closely.

The disadvantage of Ireland seems to be incredibly high rent for housing, but on the positive side if you need to share a single room apartment with 5 people it is easy to get connections 🫠 Maybe look for some squatted building?

Maybe enroll in a University there?

If you are looking for open-source end to end encrypted photo storage then Ente or Stingle are what you want.

It appears the US congress has just proposed (edited) a bill that declares "Antifa" a terrorist organization.

This doesn't even make sense as Antifa isn't an organization, but just a shared name for anyone that self-identifies as a person opposed to and willing to fight fascism 🤦‍♂️

Stay safe out there!

Note: SLRPNK is an EU based service and we are openly Antifa here, and proudly so!

Every month, we post an update on the happenings of the instance, as well as provide a sort of town square to share news and happenings in your own life.

With January comes a new year, and this time even a new quarter-century! While the last year brought with it many things to grumble about (to put it mildly), this new year brings new hopes as well; China's emissions could peak this year due to solar installations being constructed at an unprecedented scale, The fall of Assad's regime may bring a reprieve for Rojava, Unions are forming and growing at a rate we haven't seen in decades across the globe, and mutual aid organizations are experiencing an influx of new people looking to help due to recent events.

So let us face this new year together, and continue to build up, piece by piece and no matter how small, the world we want to live in.

📡 Technical updates 📡

Not much to report for technical updates, other that we updated to Lemmy version 0.19.8 last month. For the coming month we plan an update to our Movim enabling so called "stories", a form of time limited micro-blog popular on some other messengers.

Due to various reasons, we didn't finish the prototype donation page yet, but it will be available soon. Due to the high amount of submissions we also did not yet hear back from Nlnet if our grant application for adding GNU Taler donation support has been successful or not.

⚡Solar-powered servers ☀️

Last month has been again rather rainy and cold at out server location, therefore only 41% of the total electricity needs could be covered by the solar panels we installed in early October. The average over the last three months was 50%, which isn't too bad considering that these were all unusually rainy winter months. The additional grid-power was mostly wind and geothermal energy. It should be noted that these figures include the total electricity usage on the site, not only those strictly for the server that this Lemmy instance runs on.

Happy New Year, everyone.
