Wow super interesting, this community sounds pretty ideal in terms of collapse preparedness. Except maybe being in the desert? Do they have enough water? How will climate change impact the region?

But as I spoke with them, I couldn't help but think of all the people that their vision would leave behind.

... anyone who imagines a coming doomsday is faced with a choice: to prepare for it or to play a small part in working to stave it off.

Ah that old chestnut. Journalist say "Won't somebody please think of the masses?" while the news media routinely misinforms the masses and prevents any change. He does it with the framing of the article, trying to guilt people.

Must be nice to have your own ~~sheriff's department~~ paramilitary...

I've also seen this video: Starting a Longevity City: Niklas Anzinger and Laurence Ion Introduce Vitalia at EARD 2023

I do think collapsniks should do something similar, building / moving to a small town or village that is designed or can be reshaped to be a sustainable community. And cheap living environment. But it should be mostly apolitical except for a solid democratic socialist infrastructure, practical governance with a focus on sustainable food, water and energy supplies and workshops to repair and maintain everything. I know there are some projects for that, but an alliance with a few rich people to build and finance something like this could be useful - as long as it's community owned (e.g. silent partner / loan or something)

Oh thanks! Right, I guess when he fired them and that is when he became unpopular lol

If they decide to jail Cressida Gethin then they make the argument that this type of annoying / nuisance protest won't change anything (either).

But then what comes next?

Surrender to the inevitability of catastrophes, famines, conflicts, genocides and wars, including the increasing possibility of nuclear war? A young person faces 50 years of constant global decline. The murder of hope. There is still a massive climate lie in that the consequences of climate chaos aren't registering.

Its also interesting that you can recreate an accurate miniature reddit with a fraction of the users

Yeah I'm honestly surprised how well it works. Yeah you don't have the niche communities but you could absolutely move a whole niche community over from reddit and it would be fine.

Lemmy definitely needs more work though.

Oh wow. Could we domesticate beavers and train them to clean up our houses??? 🤣 Obviously they'd need to be bred to be trained to only clean up certain items.

what do you think when you read stories like these

Honestly they are so fucking sad I try to avoid reading them. Another example is this one: She Was Denied an Abortion After Roe Fell. This Is a Year in Her Family’s Life.

The monsters have been trying to do the same things in Europe though, UK has underfunded the NHS and healthcare in Germany is in deliberate decline too.

Well Europe is massively supporting and supplying Ukraine with weapons. De facto Russia is in a proxy war with the US/Nato/EU.

Huh? Doesn't everyone assume he has a whole PR team that probably runs hundreds of sock puppet accounts? Like human bots? I mean isn't a PR team basically a given for a billionaire or any special interest group?

Thanks! I didn't remember the name of this. Tons of awesome ideas, here is the list of machines they are working on: https://www.opensourceecology.org/gvcs/gvcs-machine-index. I really wish there were more grants to push R&D for this though, progress seems pretty slow.

I'd love to build a pedal powered quadricycle with electric assist that is a sturdy enough to have like a small front loader and a lawn mower attachment.

Precious plastic also has a few interesting machines.
