Fediverse

I'm a bit under 24, have the limit of my tech skills being the ability to install and sometimes troubleshoot minecraft and Skyrim mods, and have never used Linux (I've thought about it admittedly, but ultimately didn't switch to it as it doesn't look to be compatible with my vr system.)

So there are some of us here that don't fit that demographic. From talking to some of my friends though, even the idea of having to pick an instance understanding federation/defederation has been hard to explain to some, doable but they generally prefer things that are self explanatory enough to not have to be talked through them. I've tried the whole email analogy but to be honest most of them don't use email that often anyway.

A not so smart genz member here, and I believe we need a little bit more time for other genz fellas to actively post here.

I think it’s only older people who remember what the internet was like before everything became corporate controlled or SEO optimized.

I feel not nearly as much on Lemmy, but for Mastodon 100% yes. It's actually exhausting talking to them lol, they're so boring.

I would like to get more crafting content on here but tbh most of my friends from that stuff still use Facebook, never mind anything newer. They'll be ready for Fedi by about 2045 if we're lucky.

In the meantime getting to hang out with a load of likeminded nerds does in fact feel to me like a win.

Yes, but because 90% of the fediverse is older tech nerds, good luck getting them to acknowledge it.

Quite fine by me, to be honest. I was tired of all the pokemon memes and references, as well as gamespeak everywhere (like "10+ XP, hurr hurr!")

I don't fit that demographic whatsoever, but I am a tech nerd and a Linux user.

Gen-X, and have been working in technology for 27 years. I run windows as a daily driver but also am running a few host machines in my house with multiple Linux VMs. It's a mix of RockyOS, Ubuntu and arch VMs. Not a single GUI on any of them.

We are always first on the new thing. It's completely normal growth

I gall into most of those categories.

That said, I still have a hard time dropping reddit until a network effect happens here or the multi-feddit stuff can start combining same-named subs across the fediverse.

I spent most of my time on Reddit looking at: various sports,cooking, finance (pf, investing, bogleheads), IT (sysadmin, vmware, homelab), gaming (console and PC and specific game subs), and PC hardware subs. (Plus some for sale places).

I wasn't really one to do much OC, but would participate in comment threads fairly often. I think lemmy/fed has potential, but it's going to need to be simpler for the average person to get logged in and just see the content they want with out jumping through a bunch of searches and hoops.

According to this poll, fediverse definitely skews older. There's some sample bias for whoever is in this guy's circles, but I think it's relatively valid.

Completely agree, and I fit all three on the list. While a lot of new users have come in recently, the fediverse isn't as mainstream as the centralized services that everyone knows about. Also, young people will sign up for services they're friends are on.
