I was out walking around and "popping" quests on StreetComplete. I was wondering what the consensus is on the question "Who is allowed to park here?" In this case, it's an ungated parking lot next to a commercial/industrial warehouse with many companies occupying the same space. A few of the parking spots had a sign indicating "reserved for XYZ customers", but most did not. This is not a city-owned parking lot. What's the right answer?

It seems pretty clear that street-level imaging on OSM is pretty lacking, unless you only want to see highways.

I'm looking to start mapping street-level images for my city, but it seems like there are three players (integrated in the OSM editor), and I don't know which to commit to:

-KartaView

-Mapillary

-mapilio

My gut is to go with the one with the largest user base (Mapillary), but they are owned by Facebook and who knows what direction they will take in the future or what our images will actually be used for in the long-run.

Karta seems dead.

And Mapilio seems like a knock-off of Mapillary, but with a much smaller user base and an uncertain future.

Are any worth investing hundreds of hours of time to?

on a block of downtown san francisco, there are two block-long lines labelled 'address interpolation'. there aren't many nodes along this block, but the ones that exist mostly have explicit addresses assigned.

these were created 14 years ago (potlatch 0.10f). what do they do, are they valuable to renderers or to the map itself?

Running around with StreetComplete, the app sometimes tells me to leave a note instead, which I do. Short time later, I receive an email that another person has resolved my note. That's nice, but wouldn't it be better to do it all on my own?

I think I need a more powerful Editor for that, and installed Vespucci. Now I'm scared to break things. What are the next steps, how to proceed?

I see that quite a few major roads in Ontario are getting paved shoulders, plenty wide enough for cyclists, despite not being marked as bike lanes/routes.

An example of this is HWY7/12 in Port Perry - all new shoulders.

There is a tag: cycleway=shoulder, which gives me reason to think that we should be doing this.

What say you guys?

UPDATE: Bike Ottawa has some guidance on the matter. I'll be using the cycleway=soulder tag for roads that have SMOOTH and WIDE shoulders that would work well for cyclists.

I don't know whether I'm just missing an obvious solution here, but this driving me nuts.

There's a Wikipedia article I want to create a simple map for. I need a mostly greyscale (like Positron), ~1x1km section of the map on which I want draw some lines and labels in Inkscape. If I could remove all the labels including street names that'd be great, but it's not required.

Essentially, I want the export function of openstreetmap.org, but with less cluttered styles. www.printmaps.net would be exactly what I'm looling for, but their free tier watermarks the image and the license is too restrictive for Wikimedia Commons.

There's a ton of programs available on the wiki, but all of them seem to require at least some coding skills, which I don't have. I've already learned to use inkscape for some other illustrations, I'm not going down that rabbit hole again for Wikipedia.

Is there a simple, preferably web-based, tool that allows me to import or choose a style, use a GUI to select an area and then just save that as an image?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have two android devices ( both running Android 13 ) .

  1. Any OSM clients can sync each other ( bookmarks, tracks etc ) .
  2. If a self hosted service is needed, please provide details.

The backup format in OSMAnd ( .osf ), and is not recognised by Organic Maps.

I'm often unsure how to rate the surface quality of an inherently rough surface, like sett, paving stones or cobble stone.

Question 1: These surfaces are defined by having seams. So would it ever be right to rate them as 'seamless'?

Or should we rate them as 'seamless' when they only have the expected amount of seams? Especially cobblestone makes me wonder, which usually comes with large seams and a rough and irregular surface.


Question 2: Tactile paving for blind people. Does that make a surface rough for you? In a way, that's literally how this paving becomes tactile, right?


Question 3: A pedestrian crossing going over a traffic isle (but marked as one continuous path). Assuming otherwise perfect surfaces, does it have 'cracks' (since it goes over 4 curbs), and a 'rough surface' if it has tactile paving?


Question 4: The marked entitiy is a wide area, not a narrow path. You're asked to rate it's surface quality. The area is mostly flat and smooth, but has some cracks and potholes in a few localized spots.

Do you mark it as 'a little bumpy' because that's how it would feel if you walk/bike over the bad spots? Or do you mark it as 'perfect', because it's easy to find a way through without encountering any obstacles?

My impression of Organic Maps immediately improved when I started driving. It talks! It knows exit numbers! It can tell you which lanes to use! Sure, it isn’t as polished as Google Maps, but all of the functionality is present. The UI is high-contrast and easy to read, although I wish the text showing exit numbers/street names was a little bigger. When you’re simply on the road and following directions, Organic Maps feels every bit as intuitive as Google Maps.

As my fiancee and I prepared to set off into the boonies, I plugged in the address of our hotel. About 45 seconds later, Organic Maps returned the 300-mile route to our destination. It can take a lot longer to calculate longer routes using your phone’s processor instead of a huge cloud server. It didn’t really bother me though; 45 seconds is nothing compared to the 6-hour trip ahead. If that’s the cost of using a maps app that doesn’t spray your personal data all over the internet, I’ll pay it.

Hey guys.

There's a highway that connect the coast to inland, and without it drivers have a 4-hour detour. It has been closed for the past month while a forest fire has been fought by lots of fire crews. It's been burning since August 15th, so over a month now actually.

They've finally mitigated the fire enough that they are temporarily re-opening the highway, however it's remaining closed 8am - 4pm Mon-Fri so that the firemen are not blocked by congestion. When it's not closed between those hours, only 1 lane is open and traffic is led by patrol cars. There is no ETA for a full re-opening.

I went to go apply a condition, when I realized that no one had actually closed the road in the first place. So I added something like "conditional=no @ (Mon-Fri 8:00-16:00)" (I forget the exact syntax).

A day later, someone came in and reverted the change saying "the consensus is that only changes lasting 3 or more months should be made. There are people who download these maps for offline use. So no temporary closures."

But, the DOT of both states this fire is affecting are begging drivers to stop using GPS to the coast on this route - people are driving into active fire zones.

Does concession for offline users actually supersede safety?

I'm on a crusade to add all of the bus routes in my city (hopefully all of my country in a future), but there is no easily way as to "draw line here/add a node here as bus stop, tag as bus route X, rinse and repeat" as far as I know right?.

Would love some recommendations from other pros at OSM :)
