On the front page of monero.town, sm.ms and catbox.moe are recommended as image hosting services. Unfortunately both are not Tor-friendly, esp. Catbox blocks Tor.

The Cock.li guy comes up with a solution.

  1. Solution about Catbox: Just change cat in the URL to fat and the image is viewable for Tor users!

Example https://monero.town/post/1025717 where
https://files.catbox.moe/6z3p3z.jpg is not viewable via Tor
https://files.fatbox.moe/6z3p3z.jpg would be viewable via Tor

  1. How to use an inline image (in general, not only Catbox)

The syntax is ![](URL) so…
![](https://files.fatbox.moe/6z3p3z.jpg)

Result:

  1. How to make it a Clickable thumbnail

Text link would be [Text](URL) you can replace Text with an inline image, URL with the image URL, i.e.
[![](URL)](URL) so…
[![](https://files.fatbox.moe/6z3p3z.jpg)](https://files.fatbox.moe/6z3p3z.jpg)
Result

Note: Optionally you can put Alt text in ![] as in
![Monero-chan is happy](https://sample.net/happy-monerochan.png)

Another hosting service imagebam.com is iffy but Tor friendly, easy to upload images there from Tor Browser & you can direct-link to the uploaded full image.

Using 3rd party image hosting services has privacy implications, but it will save the server resource of monero.town.

I have been having long load times and a number of APIException errors lately when trying to use an app.

Bicoin Black Friday: BusKill (Open-Source Hardware Dead Man Switch) Announces 10% Discount

There are 4 reports saying this is spam, and it is indeed cross-posting link spam, and feels slightly excessive but not extremely so (?).

The thing is, Monero.town doesn’t forbid ads, and freedom of speech is important even if what is said is unpleasant for me or for someone else. Thoughts?

Edit: Since someone has appointed me as a mod in !privacy, where https://monero.town/post/1144305 is, I can remove it, except I don’t want to remove anything unless really necessary. The lack of guidelines about ads in monero.town means, the OP didn’t do anything against the rule(s).

I couldn’t remove the new one in !moneromarket https://monero.town/post/1142415 Not sure if @admin@monero.town thinks it’s bad enough, either. Monero is censorship-resistant, meaning we tend to hate deleting someone else’s speech/expression just because it’s subjectively disagreeable.

Given that Monero is money after all and some for-profit services are useful for its users too, probably commercial posts (ads) should be allowed in general, if not excessive. And BusKill ads are not excessive in terms of frequency, like only once a month.

Perceived link spamming (self-promotion) advertising SimplifiedPrivacy has been also noticed by many including myself, which has been like once or twice a week, and explicitly questioned here ( https://monero.town/post/1085883 ); but many (including myself) think these posts can be useful nevertheless, the poster being knowledgeable.

For example "3 (1 New)" is understandable: there are 3 comments, of which 1 is new. But I sometimes also see things like "6 (-3 New)", "5 (-1 New)", where the number of new comments is negative. Is this some kind of known bug, or is it by design actually meaning something? It's totally harmless, but weird...

Title. I had a fantastic experience with a company that accepts monero and wanted to post about it. I am not sure if /c/monero is the correct place for that.

7

Why did you remove the “How do I start mining monero?” post?

Because the OP may have been a child? Or simply because it should have been asked in Monero Mining rather than in Monero? Or perhaps because the question was trivial (too basic)?

While I do feel (a few more) rules are necessary here, I’d like them to be explicit and transparent, if possible. Thank you.

I have not been back since mid June when i deleted my reddit account. So, i am curious if people have noticed fewer discussions over their since this instance opened, or has there been no effect?

To be honest, no idea what this entails. I was bullied into updating the instance and the official patchnotes are just all the github changes instead of a proper write-up 😂

Something to think about. It is pointless to interact with any of those posts directly here, so as a result they get no engagement. They're just links to Reddit, and I feel like they're just funnelling engagement back there. I can't help but notice, possibly incorrectly, that activity here sharply dropped as soon as that bot went active.

If we want the content here, wouldn't it make more sense to pull non self post content directly and post it as a first class Lemmy post here without linking to the reddit post?

If our goal is to make this the new Monero home, wouldn't a better approach be adding this site to the sidebar on the subreddit, or having automod inform every poster about it's existence? Is moving here even our goal anymore?

I view this website with Firefox, and the thumbnails and images (eg Monerochan Memes) don't display because they are webp. I have the "Don't accept image/webp" add-on active but this makes no difference. Is it possible to configure the website so another inline image format is available?

Edit: I notice that accessing via https://mlmym.org/monero.town/?sort=Hot&listingType=Local some thumbnails appear, while normally none do.

I built this specifically for monero.town, but anyone can use it anywhere. It is pretty easy to configure, all the info is in the readme and there's an example configuration file to get you started using it.

Feel free to aso me any questions you want, recommendations, and also feel free to open issues in the repo.

Mastodon/Lemmy tends to be unreliable due to it's immaturity and server problems. Having a Telegram channel for Meta would help interested parties to get info when needed

From what I have learned, Reddit essentially shadowbans you, and it's likely because of your IP. If you register using a VPN, you'll be able to see your posts and comments, but others will only see 404s and [deleted]. You can see this first-hand here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/151aawx/merceneros_monero_services/

On Tor (accessing the onion address), you can surprisingly sign up and post, but signing in with a VPN somehow contaminates the account and your subsequent posts and comments won't appear, shadowbanning you.

Server showed as online on the hosting provider dashboard but it wasn't responding. After contacting support, this was fixed at some point.

This led to a config file being reverted because of a setting I didn't change earlier which led to the page only showing "Server error."

Everything should work again and in the future that config file shouldn't change by itself anymore. I still have no idea what the problem on the providers side was, let's hope it doesn't happen again :P

Whats difference between of them? I want to follow /r/monero alternative on Lemmy

There is a lot we can do but it might become a bit spammy if we add too much. Some ideas would be:

  • Monero ecosystem releases (Monero, GUI, Haveno, Serai, etc) either in a special releases community or the regular Monero one
  • DarknetLive posts to the darknet community
  • Crypto news to the cryptocurrency community

All of these feeds are of high quality and shouldn't completely spam us.

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Edit: Similar, even better tool like this.

FediRedirect is a browser extension that redirects you to your favorite instance.

It currently supports:

Edit 2: This has been replaced with a bot that posts way more reliably, as well as locally to the instance.

~~#### Edit: This doesn't seem to work that well, will be upgraded soon.~~

~~Posts made to r/Monero can now be seen on monero.town by subscribing to !monero@lemmit.online 🎉~~

This is an automated archive made by the Lemmit Bot.

The original was posted on /r/monero by /u/monerobull on 2023-07-10 19:36:45+00:00.

If this works as planned, this post should show up in the feed of https://monero.town/, a monero-focused Lemmy instance.

Comments made on either the reddit or Lemmy side don't get synced, just the post itself.

If you can see this post on .town, congratulations, you don't have to visit reddit anymore 🥳

A bunch of instances got compromised earlier today. Monero.town was not effected since this particular exploit requires a server to have custom emojis enabled.

FYI!!! In case you start getting re-directed to porn sites.

Maybe the admin got hacked?

edit: lemmy.blahaj.zone has also been hacked. beehaw.org is also down, possibly intentionally by their admins until the issue is fixed.

xmrtown4e5hj3yivdimt27np24atr7dyd7savkk6of5mdlykret7igqd.onion

This instance doesn't share its backend with monero.town, in fact, it runs on an entirely different (and way less reliable) server.

Edit: Subscriptions aren't working since remote instances don't know where to send their posts (doesn't work with onion addresses). This means that only manually searched posts actually show up, making the whole instance pretty useless ._.

~~You can still view monero.town and the rest of the fediverse through federation. You can either put communities into the searchbar and subscribe to them (Example !monero@monero.town) or put entire links to posts from other instances into it to make them show up here.~~

Since this instance is on Tor, it can federate inwards (pull content from other lemmy servers) but CAN'T federate outwards (interacting with posts on other servers). You can still comment and vote but only people on this instance will be able to see this. You are essentially siloed with a one-way window into the outside world.

For now, registration is open because I don't want to manage applications on two instances at once. Don't abuse this or it will be shut.

Here is the changelog.

This upgrade brings a ton of bugfixes and performance improvements.

It also broke the nice custom theme we had 😅 I'll try to iron this out but for the time being we will change back to a default theme.
