I was told we can't build transit because we'd have to take private property via eminent domain, what gives?

On the one hand, fuck eminent domain for parking when public transit is needed. On the other hand, fuck corporate chain restaurants. The same company responsible for IHOP is also responsible for Applebee's. Both push small business restaurants out of the market. So I'm pretty much on team no one here.

I've never been to Massachusetts and hate IHOP, but eminent domain troubles me. It ought to be used rarely, and only for projects that undeniably build a better community.

A frickin' parking garage does not merit taking by eminent domain.

I think it should be more straightforward for transit projects

For an improved streetcar or rapid transit line, absolutely use eminent domain.

Nobody seems to be mentioning that they are also taking and demolishing an urgent care clinic as well as a public parking lot as stated in the article. The loss of health resources for potentially private parking is way worse than some IHOP. I live not far from Quincy and I would be pissed if this happened in my neighborhood. I'm pissed about it anyways tbh

Ooooh yeah this is bad. This is very bad.

You can't take private property from corporations and people to use it publicly! We could turn it into a parking lot to line ~~our~~ the city's coffers instead!

More pancakes, less cars.

What gives is the owners of the IHOP took the cash without a huge legal fight

[–] cyberic@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

But I mean its a IHOP. The government is making the world a better place by taking it down

IHOP is better than a parking garage. At least there’s some miserable low paying jobs instead of almost zero that a garage provides.
