Sometimes we have those little epiphanies in the shower.. sometimes they come from other places. This is a home for those epiphanies.

I'm willing to suffer (very) mild inconvenience.

A lot of young people know and understand that we are doomed, and are already pretty inconvenienced by a lot of things.

I could have rephrased it to clarify that some people are willing/unwilling participants in making sacrifices

Go on. What should people be doing? What inconveniences should people be tolerating, that they are not currently?

  • Going without single use plastic items. A family member of mine even throws away tupperware after a single use because, "It's too much work to wash them."

  • Gas prices too high? Reduce demand by choosing an alternative form of transportation when possible, or trade in that 8 cylinder truck that's never touched a dirt road, or been to a job site, for something more fuel efficient. Rent a U-Haul for the 1 time every 5 years you have to move your buddies couch.

  • Don't like how mega-corporations monetize your information and do everything they can to make damn certain you don't 'own' anything? If avaible, support or contribute to an alternative even though you will likely receive a less polished product (e.g. Reddit vs Lemmy)

  • Have a strong distaste for the rapidly expanding homeless population? Maybe sacritice some profit and don't raise the rents of your tenants ever year to "fair market rate" when you've already paid off the property or have mortage payments that are 1/8th what you're charging in rent.

I could go on. If you're poor as shit, then do what you have to do to get through the day. However, if you have the means then maybe, just maybe, stop and consider that convenience and personal gain is possibly not the most important thing in the world.

Those are some generalizations you're making. Saying "no one" in the title was a bit of an exaggeration, no? There are plenty of people who don't buy single-use items. Lots of people work from home, including me and my wife. We don't have a truck. Most people aren't landlords and thus aren't in a position to control rest prices.

tragedy of the commons. People impacted arent in position to change it, people in the position to change it aren't impacted.

One day we will realize individual actions wont cut it and we need to unite against those burning our world instead of quibbling about who recycles more.

It is absolutely hyperbole. If the shoe doesn't fit don't wear it.

I fear that rich people may have to be slightly less rich, truly a horrifying inconvenience.

[–] morphballganon@lemmynsfw.com -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OP isn't talking about the rich.

[–] silentslinky@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Of course I'm including the wealthy

You said "no one" wants to be inconvenienced. It was clearly a jab at the common Joe, not the 1%.

Clearly, it wasn't.

What if no one actually want to save anything that himself

[–] TheAlbatross@startrek.website 2 points 1 year ago

There's a wise saying I try to recall when I'm daunted by the scale of a task and my seeming inability to affect the outcome.

"You are not obliged to complete the work, but neither are you free to avoid it."
